Nick Baker-Monteys,the director of the award-winning German film ‘Der Mann Der Ueber Autos’ (The man who jumped cars) is desirous to teach at the National College of Arts’. Nick expressed his desire to stay in Lahore and teach the National College of Arts students during the German Film Festival held by the college in collaboration with The Annemarie-Schimmel Haus,(German Cultural Centre),the Goethe-Institute and Achtung-Berlin (New Berlin Film Award).
The three-day event was started on Friday and concluded on Sunday. The 2nd annual German Film Festival which screened five German movies also had the interactive sessions of foreign guests with the students and teachers of the college.
On last day of the festival,Nick Baker-Monteys’ movie ‘The man who jumped cars’ was screened. The award-winning film at both the 2011 Berlin and Aubagne International Film Festivals tells the story of a young man who walks on foot from Berlin to South Germany. Since the loss of his best friend in a car accident,Julian has been living in a psychiatric hospital. After hearing that the father of his deceased friend has a degenerative heart disease,he breaks out of the hospital and begins a journey across Germany,hoping his sacrifice on foot will result in healing powers fro the father. Along the way,Julian meets a host of characters who help him learn the truth behind the human spirit. The other movie screened on the occasion was ‘Das Lied in Mir’ (The day I was not born) directed by Florian Cossen. The film tells that during a stopover on her way to Chile,a 31 years old Maria recognizes a lullaby in Buenos Aires. Maria does not speak a word of Spanish,she breaks off her journey and wanders through out an unfamiliar city. On the phone to her father,she tells all about her visit to the city. Two days later,her father arrives at the hotel. The other movies including ‘Ueber uns das All’ (Above us Only Sky) directed by Jan Schomburg,‘Almanya’ direction of Yasmin Samdereli,Vincent Wants to See by Ralf Huettner and Ueber Uns Das All (Above Us only Sky) also screened on the occasion.
The film festival also features a panel discussion on the topic ‘Ethics in films:Its need and importance’ wherein NCA Film Department Head Shireen Pasha,famous artist Usman Peerzada,film maker Bilal Lashari and Nick Baker-Monteys,a German film director were the panellists.
Qudia Raheem,one of the organiser and teacher of NCA said that the interest of the foreign director to teach the student of NCA might be a good omen for collapsing Pakistani film industry as he would come to teach the student with lot of experience. She said the festival was quite a good experience. She further said after very good response,they had planned to the hold the festival annually.
