Las Vegas – Our Kind of Town

We are lucky to have traveled all over the world. In fact our daughter pointed out that we have been to every continent except Antarctica. With all this travel, one of our favorite destinations for adults remains Las Vegas, Nevada.

Why Vegas? We love the atmosphere, the sound, the activities and the many options to work on the way. Vegas isn’t just about gambling, though boy do we love that part! It’s also a place to see world-class shows, enjoy fine dining, and an area that’s surprisingly close to some amazing outdoor activities.

First, gambling, there is no doubt that Vegas is a city built on wagering. We are not so much into table games or slot machines, we like sports betting and more specifically American football betting (I have to say). If you like to bet on football, the best time to go is the Thanksgiving weekend. Why? It’s simple, there are so many games to choose from in one weekend that the chances of finding ‘game of the year’ have never been better. We’ve been lucky enough to win over the last 3 years by analyzing the entire table, figuring out the “best bet” and then winning with it. Not only do you have the full pro schedule, but of course you also have the college schedule spread over 4 days – a great betting opportunity.

When it comes to entertainment, we’ve found no better place than Vegas. The shows, while certainly not cheap (so you’ll need to win big) are definitely worth seeing. We are especially fond of Cirque du Soleil shows and have seen several in Vegas, including “O”, “Zumanity” and “Mystere”. Of these, we rank them from best to worst as follows:

1. “Hey”, a wonderful show that combines water with “land” actions

2. “Mystery”, a traditional circus performance, very good

3. “Zumanity”, we’re disappointed, it’s supposed to be the “sexy” version of Circus, but we didn’t get enough of it like the rest of us.

In addition to the various Vegas Circus shows (we haven’t seen “Ka” yet) there’s our favorite Lance Burton magic, Rita Rudner comedy, and variety shows to choose from.

One of the loud shows we don’t recommend is the Le Reve show at Wynn. Even though the scene is so amazing, the show itself disappoints, we just put it above Zumanity. If you decide to, try it for the VIP seats, where you’ll be greeted with a bottle of champagne, chocolate-covered cherries, and foot monitors that let you see the “action” behind the scenes and underwater (which really great).

For dinner, we have a tradition of going to the “Eiffel Tower” at the Paris Casino for a “big night”. We always choose an evening to dress up (Tux) and combine dinner and a show. The food at the Eiffel Tower is fantastic, ask for a table by the windows and you can enjoy the Dancing Fountains show while you dine across the street at the Bellagio. Eiffel has French cuisine (amazing?) with an amazing wine list, great servers, and an amazing selection of soufflés that you can whip up for dessert.

As for the location, it totally depends on your taste and preferences. We actually stay off the Orleans casino strip, which surprises some people. Why do we choose to stay in them? Above all is the value, Orléans offers very good rooms with amazing views of the strip and / or mountains. The Orleans has a very good exercise/fitness center, a very nice pool area and offers spa and massage services. The rooms are cheaper than the strip and we spend very little time in our room anyway. The Orleans has a very good sports book where we place all our sports bets and a nice gym where you can watch the games on a number of big screen TVs. The Strip is less than 5 minutes away from Orleans and we don’t have to deal with all the hustle and bustle and traffic on the Strip. We have tried other casinos, last year we actually booked Treasure Island, but after a one night stay we checked out. We found everything to be much more expensive at TI, including the ridiculous $20 per person fee to use the fitness center (which is included in your room charge at the Orleans). After all, we prefer to free up our cash flow for gambling, shows and dining rather than spending it on a room.

Vegas is not for kids, a few years ago they tried to make the city a “family friendly” resort, it’s not! It’s definitely Disney World for adults, but having said that, it’s also a great place to have fun. Enjoy Vegas, the happiest place on earth – for those with winning bets!
