The Spread Offense – A Fast, Simple Way to Confuse a Defense

This is Article 3 of 3 offenses that youth basketball teams can easily commit. I don’t know any of them as games, but as basic moves that players should have in their arsenal.

It’s just called rampant crime.

This offense works very well against zone defenses as long as the players are patient and don’t pull the ball en masse.

Normally, dribbling penetration is a great way to beat the zone, but if you ever watch a junior game, the ball carrier often goes over dribbles and gets trapped either in the corner or in the middle too much. We end up with a game full of alternate clauses and assets.

What makes this offense work is that you can add more simple pieces to it once the players feel comfortable with it around the horn. The most interesting thing is that you can perform dribbling penetration and passing and attacking.

But before we do, let’s discuss the ins and outs of this crime.

First, you place your players in a spread formation around the perimeter.

The ball is passed around until a player has an open shot or lane to enter the defense. What I found by passing the ball around the perimeter was that their defense couldn’t move fast enough to hold onto the ball and the lanes were wide open and the dribbler would end up with a layup. This may seem oversimplified, but remember, we’re talking about youth basketball. The tendency is to overplay the defense.

If there aren’t many open shots or jumps around the perimeter, you can pass and cut them or start adjusting chins and rolls.

This offense also works well against teams that allow one defensive player to break free or spy while others play in a standard zone. Eventually, the player gets tired of chasing the ball and the result is open lanes. Usually, teams let their best offensive player walk because most of their scoring comes from steals.
