Time Travel For Mental Health – Feel Younger, Be Younger

Sometimes—perhaps always—training the mind is as important to fitness as exercising the body. Today, let’s talk about something that will make you feel young again, really. It can actually make you look younger, physiologically, by changing your mindset and improving your mental health, a worthy goal.

OK. Here’s an easy, potentially free, and completely safe way to travel through time. Silence. It’s real, it’s possible, it’s affordable, and you can do it. Yes, everyone can do it.

Do something you haven’t done in years. Do something you did as a child or teenager, something you did often and enjoyed a lot. Here is an example.

I just went for a bath. I mean a real swim, more than a mile. Yes, I swam several thousand meters in the Y pool. To me, that’s magic. Why? Well, I grew up on the swim team, and in the summer we practiced twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. So I always smelled chlorine. I guess you could say I smelled like chlorine. My eyes were always bloodshot – we didn’t have glasses then – and I always looked tanned and white at the same time. And, of course, it was important for my pleasure that I was surrounded by friends when I was swimming. Within hours of the workout, I felt a sweet fatigue in my muscles. So that means I’ve had this feeling most of the time.

Now many years ahead. And I mean “a lot” because I’m 56 now. If I smell that much chlorine I get those weird times and if I actually get in the pool and swim it all comes back. I know I’m not as strong as I was then, as skinny as I was then. I know my friends – well, those friends – aren’t in the pool with me, but still, it’s a fun reminder of those days. When I get out of the pool, the great feeling, the essence of it lasts for hours. I feel exactly the same sweet tiredness I felt 40 years ago. Namely. It’s like a mood-altering, reality-altering drug that’s not a drug, but a natural, healthy, fulfilling experience, and I wish that for everyone.

Now it’s your turn. Can you recreate a pleasant experience as a child or teenager? Perhaps you can. Maybe it’s fishing, dancing, water skiing, snow skiing, playing baseball or football, watching a scary movie, playing cards, monopoly, going on a trip, camping or having a picnic.

The possibilities are endless, but the thing is, you have to think about something that you often grew up with in your happiest years. Recreate as much of it as you can, i.e. smells, clothes, surroundings, music, friends.

If you played soccer in school, I’m sure holding a soccer ball in your hand, feeling its weight and texture, and the smell of leather will bring back memories and trigger “feel good” hormones. Even the smell of the locker room, as disgusting as it sounds, probably evokes the feeling of those days when chlorine affects me.

If you fished as a kid, the smell of fish can do it, the site of one of those red and white bobbers, the smell of the lakeshore – yes, there’s a distinct smell when you’re standing by the pond – will take you back. Even opening a toolbox with the distinct sound and smell brings back all kinds of memories for me. Immediately, I’m back on the dock at White Sands Beach, my brother Milt by my side, early in the morning, just the two of us, quietly talking about anything and everything. Pick up a pole and throw it only once. It will be very good, very familiar and natural.

Have you played baseball? Pick up the bat and do it a few times. Oh yeah. I bet your blood pressure will drop instantly as you enjoy familiar sensations you haven’t felt in years.

If you played an instrument in school, get one. Seriously. My father is now 81 years old. When he was in college, he played the trumpet and had a dance band. A few years ago, my mother gave him a trumpet for Christmas. She cried. Holding and smelling metal was sad for him. Years later, he started playing again. It’s never too late.

If you spent a lot of happy times at the beach as a child, then you should go back there as soon as possible. The smell of salt, the screams of the fishes, the warm sun on your skin, the smell of Copperton and the sand that is thick between your toes will make you think back to those beach visits years ago.

This trip does something to your brain, something good. I’m not a doctor, so I don’t know exactly what’s going on, but I do know that it’s a way to nurture your soul. I believe in it.

what do you say You don’t have time? Too many commitments? Are the kids keeping you too busy?

None of these reasons are sufficient. Remember that you are not doing this just for you, although that would be reason enough; you do it for them as well as for your loved ones. You’ll be a better friend, a better spouse, and a better parent if you make time to do things that make you feel good. Such experiences have healing power.

You’ll be motivated to help your loved ones create a similarly enriching experience because you’ll be reminded of how much they meant to you. You’ll force yourself to step out of your busy life more often to create new memories that you’ll cherish twenty years from now.
