Purpose Driven Money Making – Gathering Clues to Discover Your Purpose
Once you know your purpose, you can ask yourself, “Will this action or product bring me closer or further away from my life?” If it takes you further, you can ask, “Am I paying this price now?” This ability to ask these kinds of questions brings more clarity to your work. Realizing that you are in control gives you more confidence when you exercise that control and make decisions that you know are in line with your goals. This is the first step in reviving your passion, dreams and business.
Your goal is very personal to you. Only you can figure out what it is for you. It takes some time and effort to clearly articulate your purpose. It’s deep work, but well worth it.
Well, you think, well, on board, it’s worth it, but HOW? Excellent question. There are several exercises you will want to do. Oh, did I say exercises? Yes, exercises, but they are not painful. See, you have set a precedent for yourself. These exercises will show you the tips.
Here we go….
Find a quiet place to think. It will take you 30 minutes, more or less.
If this means
- entering a bathroom with a locked door and a sign that says “Stay out, ask your parents” or
- get up 30 minutes early before anyone else does, or
- driving the kids to soccer and sitting in my van (yes, I have a van too) or
- tell everyone you’re going shopping, but you’re just going to park and stay in your car,
I have a client who is a dance teacher. She loves her dance form and loves her students. It is clearly seen in his work. The point is that sometimes she needs time to herself. He feels so guilty about not giving any time to his business and his students that he signs up for weekend seminars, actually pays for them, and then doesn’t go. She doesn’t tell anyone she’s not gone, but tells them she’s booked and will be out of town for the weekend. I am not suggesting that you buy your solitude. I suggest that you are not alone in blaming yourself for wasting time rather than those around you. I tell you that it is good to take this time for yourself and you do not feel guilty. Your work on yourself is actually giving your loved ones a fuller, more complete version of you.
Schedule in that 30 minutes of “me time” and don’t move it (if you drive someone to the emergency room, but don’t move it shorter). This is a sacred work. You can tell your family, friends, colleagues that you are doing some homework that your coach/mentor asked you to do (which I am through this article). You can even tell them you have a conference call with me if that helps you schedule it. You don’t need to tell them that this is a paper conference. I say this again because it’s so important – this work and time will allow you to be a better you and improve your business and the lives of those around you.
In this quiet place, leave all electronics off or off. This means iPhone, iPad, iPod, regular phone, radio, TV. I promise you, everything will be waiting for you when you finish. Get a piece of paper, this article, and a pen or pencil.
In this quiet place, resist the urge to clean up, lie down for a bit, or take a nap.
Ok, now the exercises…
Write a big list of your favorite activities that you do now. Yes, there are things. I know that even if you don’t feel like you don’t have enough time to do them or as much as you want. It can …
- I like walking the dog.
- I love making cupcakes with my daughter.
- I love watching Sunday football with my family.
- I love watching my son play football.
- I like to help my children with their homework.
- I like reading.
Make a list of things you enjoyed doing before life became difficult. It could be something like…
- I loved going to the gym.
- I loved going to dance class.
- I enjoyed painting in the sunroom.
- I enjoyed going “hunting for items” at garage sales.
Make a list of the types of groups you’ve belonged to – go as far back as you can in your memory. It can …
- a sorority in college
- high school drama club
- sports teams – either as a player or as a coach
- religious organizations
Make a list of people who have influenced your life and why you are connected to them. It can …
- a mentor at work because he guided you through a big decision
- the teacher who recognized your talent and said
- parents, or grandparents who always believed in you
Make a list of the TV shows you watch.
Make a list of the books you read. What’s on your bookshelf?
What are your collections? Is it shoes, cookbooks, cars, appliances, etc.?
Think about your life and identify a time when you were truly in tune with the universe, when everything was right, even if it was a lot of work. what were you doing Describe it in detail. Look at the elements and describe WHY you liked each one.
List the things you want to do at work. What makes time not notice how much time?
Is it finished? OK. Look at your lists. What patterns do you notice? What do these things have in common? What threads are there?
Finally, complete the sentence: My goal is to ___________________.
When you are faced with your next business or family decision, use this sentence and see if it makes the decision easier.
