Ness Notes (August 4)

As I’ve so often said, “Fortunes change very quickly in MLB.” Just the latest examples are the current fates of the LA Dodgers and the St Louis Cardinals. The Dodgers won last night 3-0 in Greg Maddux’s team debut (six innings and no hits!) and enter the weekend with MLB’s longest active winning streak (six straight).

My free play for Friday is on the Oak A’s over the Sea Mariners at 10:05 ET. Tonight in MLB, I’m releasing one of my exclusive LEGEND Plays (4-0 in MLB 2006), as I look to break out of an UGLY nine-day run. Be sure to check back over the weekend for my play on this year’s NFL Hall of Fame Game on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Cardinals were beaten 8-1 by the Phillies last night, as Chase Utley had three hits for the Phillies while extending his hitting streak to 35 games. The Cardinals have now lost seven consecutive games, MLB’s longest active losing streak. Not long ago, things had been very different for these two teams.

The Dodgers opened the second half of the season by losing 13 of their first 14 games (were outscored 81-29) and had lost eight straight games heading into their three-game home series with the Nationals last Friday. The Dodgers won a week ago tonight by the score of 13-1 and have outscored opponents by a combined 42-16 in their winning streak.

The Cardinals were struggling before the break and had dropped 13 of 16 games after losing the first game of their four-game series with the Astros in Houston, on the final weekend of the season’s first half. However, the Cards took the final three games of that series and then opened the second half by sweeping a four-game series in LA vs the then-slumping Dodgers.

Now the Cards are back struggling, allowing 34 hits and 24 runs in their last two games, while getting outscored 50-26 in their current slide. The Dodgers will try to extend their winning streak this weekend in Florida while the Cards attempt to end their slide against the Brewers at home. St Louis opened a minus-$1.85 favorite despite their losing streak, as Chris Carpenter gets the start and the early money already has them hovering around minus-$2.00.

Speaking of $2.00-favorites, Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs open Friday’s 15-game schedule as a minus-$2.15 favorite when they host the Pirates at 2:20 ET. Zambrano (12-3, 3.26) has won his last nine decisions, last losing on May 31. He is 7-2 with a 3.45 ERA in 11 career starts and two relief appearances against Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh starts Tom Gorzelanny, coming off his first ML win in his last outing. However, at 13-40, the Pirates own MLB’s worst road record.

Three AL teams opened as $2.00-favorites on Friday and all are playing on the road! Randy Johnson goes for the Yankees when they visit the Orioles tonight at 7:05 ET and is 11-9 with a 5.07 ERA. However, the Orioles send Bruce Chen to the mound, he of the 0-6 mark with a 7.07 ERA, if you are wondering why the Yankees are such a big favorite.

The Red Sox visit the Devil Rays in Tampa tonight at 7:15 ET and with Curt Schilling on the mound, opened as favorites of minus-$2.30. Boston dominated the series at Tropicana Field from 2001-2004, going 28-10 over that span. Since the start of last season though, the Red Sox have gone 6-10 at Tampa Bay and have lost their last three series there – including both this season.

Curt Schilling (13-4, 3.84 ERA) has also had his problems at Tropicana Field this season, dropping both of his starts there to account for half of his losses. Meanwhile, Boston’s starting rotation has posted a 2-5 record, 7.47 ERA and .342 batting average against over their last 11 contests. So why are the Red Sox such big favorites? The answer is Tampa’s rookie starter, James Shields. The right-hander is 0-5 with a 7.26 ERA in his last seven starts after going 4-0 in his first five career outings

Minnesota’s Johan Santana (12-5, 3.11 ERA) is 9-3 with a 3.74 ERA in 25 career appearances versus the Royals, including 14 starts. He’ll try for his 10th career win against the Royals tonight at 8:10 ET, a team that owns MLB’s worst overall record (38-70) and is just 8-22 against lefty starters this season. Mark Redman (7-6, 5.40) goes for KC and the Twins have had little trouble hitting Redman. He lasted just 1 2-3 innings in a 7-3 loss to Minnesota on April 27, allowing six hits and five runs. Redman is 0-3 with a 6.14 ERA in seven career starts versus the Twins.

NFL notes

The 2006 NFL preseason gets underway Sunday night from Canton, Ohio with the Hall of Fame Game between the Oakland Raiders and the Philadelphia Eagles (8:00 ET on NBC). The Eagles are favored by three points with the total hovering around 36 or 36 1/2. I’ve been ‘teasing’ the upcoming NFL season all week and will my countdown to the 2006 season in earnest next week.

It’s important to point out that fortunes change quickly in the NFL, just like in MLB. Consider that since the NFL expanded to 32 teams and two four-division conferences, 21 of the 32 teams have won at least one divisional title (65.6 percent) and 26 teams (81.3 percent) have made at least one playoff appearance.

The six non-playoff participants these last four years are the Cardinals (last made the postseason in ’98), the Bills and the Lions who last made the playoffs in ’99, the Saints (last made the playoffs in ’00) and the Dolphins and Texans. Miami, which incidentally ended the 2005 season with a six-game winning streak, last made the playoffs in ’01, while the expansion Texans are 0-for-4 in their four years since becoming the NFL’s 32nd franchise in 2002.

Speaking of the playoffs, last year’s 12-team playoff field included seven teams which had not qualified for the postseason in 2004. The league adopted its current 12-team playoff field in the 1990 season and beginning in 1991, it’s hardly unusual for a year’s roster of playoff teams to be filled with teams that had not qualified for the postseason the previous year.

Last year’s total of seven was high but was one short of the 2003 playoff season, when eight teams in that year’s postseason field had not qualified for the previous year’s playoffs. The average playoff season (over these last 15 years) has seen its playoff roster fiilled with an average of 5.67 teams per season that had not made the previous year’s postseason. The 1994 season saw just four non-playoff participants from the previous year, as five of the six NFC representatives had also been in the 1993 playoffs.

The AFC West has been the league’s most volatile division since 2002, as all four teams in that division have won division titles these last four years. The Raiders won in 2002, the Chiefs in 2003, the Chargers in 2004 and the Broncos last year. The most stable divisions have been the AFC East and South, where the Pats (East) and Colts (South) have each claimed three consecutive division titles.

The Packers had won three straight NFC North titles heading into the 2005 season as had the Eagles in the NFC East but both of those runs came to an end last year with the 11-5 Bears winning the North (GB was just 4-12) and the 11-5 Giants winning the East (Philly was just 6-10).

Who Is The Best Football Player Of All Time Football Spread Offense

You are searching about Who Is The Best Football Player Of All Time, today we will share with you article about Who Is The Best Football Player Of All Time was compiled and edited by our team from many sources on the internet. Hope this article on the topic Who Is The Best Football Player Of All Time is useful to you.

Football Spread Offense

Today I want to talk with Head Coach Bill Renner and his Spread Offense which he calls: 5-Wide Attack Spread Offense

Article 1 – For an offense, nothing is more frustrating than having a defense that Attacks you to the point that you are passive, defensive, and worried about not being able to get points or move the ball. They have succeeded in making your offense take on a defensive mind set of “just don’t lose the game” or “we will wait for a good opportunity”.

Well, the 5 Wide Attack Offense’s mission is to never allow that mind set to become prevalent. In fact, the 5 Wide Attack Offense reverses that mind set and puts the defense in the passive, defensive mode and worries if they can stop it.

HOW does it do this? With formations that limit the defensive alignment so you can practice against exactly what you will see on game day. With a no huddle system that makes the defense play at your tempo. With offense tempo changes that keep the defense from being able to lock in on your offense. With 5 receivers in every pass play and 4 receivers on every run play which disguises their pass run read of your offense.

Good defenses are programmed to react and not think. The 5 Wide Attack Offense does not allow them to ever get in a reacting state, it always keeps them thinking. Thinking defenses are slow defenses which become uncertain defenses who then become targets for your Attack offense. Once you have them confused, doubt creeps in and then the points roll up on the scoreboard.

Instilling the element of doubt in a defense is your chief weapon against an aggressive defense. Never be without the tools to create this doubt so you can score as many points as necessary to win. The 5 Wide Attack Offense will give you those tools!

What Year Was The First College Football Game Played Make-Up of a College Mascot

You are searching about What Year Was The First College Football Game Played, today we will share with you article about What Year Was The First College Football Game Played was compiled and edited by our team from many sources on the internet. Hope this article on the topic What Year Was The First College Football Game Played is useful to you.

Make-Up of a College Mascot

As a spectator at a college football game in early September, my eyes scanned the stadium as I entered to find it filled with fans, coaches, cheerleaders, team players, the marching band, the media, and last but not least – the school’s mascot. I often wonder about who is inside that cute little (sometimes enormous) costume and what it must be like to view their world from within. Is it a male or female entertaining the fans and posing for photo opportunities? If I met this person outside of the costume, would they have the same exuberant personality I witnessed at the game? How uncomfortable are they when suited up in the costume? Are they burning up? Is it hard to breathe? What thoughts run through their minds as people anxiously gather round and stand by to pose for a photo? Ahh, the things a college mascot must (and do) endure for the price of notoriety and fame even when there’s so little of either that goes with the job. Other than classmates and faculty, no one really knows who makes up the college mascot and brings it to life.

I remember my first college football game when I attended specifically to watch my son be part of the opening event that welcomed the team on the field. I soaked up everything about that game and felt like a teenager again thinking back to my high school days. This was the first time I caught sight of the school’s mascot who, at every glance I got, was quite entertaining and amusing. This mascot certainly did their job well because I felt even more proud to be associated with the university.

As in any profession, there are requirements that clearly define the make up of the perfect candidate. Mascots must be physically fit and energetic. There is no standing still (unless posing for a photo) when you must be visible among the fans and actively involved at all times. Mascots who are athletically inclined, quite limber and extremely flexible, like that of a cheerleader, have the upper hand. Gymnastics, dance, and recreational sports have their advantages indeed. Candidates must be able to withstand the heat. Temperatures can easily reach 120 degrees inside those costumes and often do especially if parading around a football field in sunny Florida in the middle of September. Keeping yourself hydrated is an absolute necessity. And last but not least a mascot must be entertaining which requires personality, humor, creativity and spontaneity. Personality is a gift and not something that can be learned. You either have it or you don’t. This also holds true with having a humorous side and a knack for being creative.

Practice makes perfect. We have all heard that cliche before. There’s nothing more to add to that. It’s just plain common sense. What better way to critique your performance than to watch a video of yourself. Mascots must know the rules of the game. There is nothing more embarrassing than a mascot pumping up the crowd for something that benefits the visiting team. Frightened children, obnoxious fans, devastating losses, these things are a given and a good mascot should always know exactly how to negotiate, act upon, and execute necessary improvisations to deal with any surrounding circumstances – winning or losing, in the splendor of victory or the agony of defeat.

The job is a voluntary position but depending on the college or university, one might receive a scholarship. Being able to travel with the team, work with the cheerleaders and band members instills teamwork and brings about lifelong friendships. Some might say a mascot has the opportunity to act like a fool since the general public has no idea who fills the costume; but don’t be fooled, there’s a method to the madness. There are numerous rewards for a college mascot but the greatest of all would be self-actualization. Underneath all that make-up you are bound to find a unique individual representing their alma mater with a great sense of pride, incredible endurance, and perhaps even an astounding outlook on life!

What Channel Is The Nfl Football Game On Tonight National Football League (NFL) Football – A League Of Its Own

You are searching about What Channel Is The Nfl Football Game On Tonight, today we will share with you article about What Channel Is The Nfl Football Game On Tonight was compiled and edited by our team from many sources on the internet. Hope this article on the topic What Channel Is The Nfl Football Game On Tonight is useful to you.

National Football League (NFL) Football – A League Of Its Own

Certain activities define the character of a nation. Likewise, the National Football League (NFL) defines the American character probably more than anything else. Conceived as the American Professional Football Association in 1920, it soon adopted the name National Football League in 1922. Undoubtedly the largest of all professional football leagues in America, NFL is made up of 32 teams coming from numerous American regions and cities.

With seeds in the American college football genre, NFL football is a direct descendant of rugby football. Rugby football, in its turn, was imported to the US from Canada in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. In its infancy, it became synonymous with American college football with Montreal’s McGill University inviting Harvard University to Quebec to play the Canadian version of rugby football.

Meanwhile, professional American football was gaining momentum despite the renowned elite football college games. This was happening mainly on the East coast, while professional football was stealing the show in the Midwest. The American Professional Football Association was founded in Ohio with legendary athlete Jim Thorpe as President. It began with eleven teams and was not strictly a league. The main purpose was to end robbing other teams’ players to win a football game.

With the birth of NFL, rules became more stringent and laws began to be enforced. However, teams continued to trickle in and leave at the same pace. It was in the 1970’s and 1980’s that NFL football finally secured its position in the heart and culture of America as the most important football event of the nation. The Super Bowl, a name given to the final game in a NFL series, became an undeclared yet accepted national holiday.

What sealed the NFL football in every American’s heart was the cult it created. It was not only the game that mattered; it was the entire event, the entertainment, the TV coverage and everything that added to the glamour of the football series. To add further to the glitz, NFL introduced pre-season exhibition games. And to add a little more flavor the game, NFL opted to play them international. This came to be known as the American Bowls.

In 1991, it formed the World League of American Football with developmental purposes in mind. This body, presently known as the NFL Europa, has teams in Germany and Netherlands. In 2003, the NFL League launched its own cable-TV channel, the NFL Network.

What Time Does The Usfl Football Game Start Today The Five Best Rushing Seasons in Denver Broncos History

You are searching about What Time Does The Usfl Football Game Start Today, today we will share with you article about What Time Does The Usfl Football Game Start Today was compiled and edited by our team from many sources on the internet. The Five Best Rushing Seasons in Denver Broncos History

For most teams, especially teams that want to be successful, having a strong running game is very important. Running the ball gains yardage, eats time off the clock, and wears the opposing team down. Also, there are fewer things that can go wrong when running than can go wrong when passing too.

The Denver Broncos came into professional football in 1960 as a charter member of the American Football League. They have had an up and down existence, experiencing everything from being last in the league to being back to back Super Bowl champions. Their running backs have played a large role in this history too.

Here are the top five rushing seasons in Denver Broncos history:

#5 – Clinton Portis – 2002

2002 would see the Denver Broncos get off to 7-3 start before finishing the year with a record of 9-7. Portis had a great season that year, finishing with 273 carries for 1,508 yards and 15 touchdowns.

#4 – Terrell Davis – 1996

1996 saw the Broncos finish the season with a 13-3 record, only to lose in the first round of the playoffs to the Jacksonville Jaguars. Terrell Davis did very well, carrying the ball 345 times for 1,538 yards and 13 touchdowns.

#3 – Clinton Portis – 2003

In 2003, the Broncos went 10-6, finishing with four wins in the last five weeks of the season. They then lost to the Indianapolis Colts in the first week of the playoffs. Clinton Portis did his part too, rushing 290 times for 1,591 yards and 14 touchdowns.

#2 – Terrell Davis – 1997

The Broncos went 12-4 in 1997, then marched through the playoffs and defeated the Green Bay Packers in the Super Bowl. Terrell Davis had a great season that year, carrying the ball 369 times for 1,750 yards and 15 touchdowns.

#1 – Terrell Davis – 1998

In 1998, Denver was at one time 13-0 before finishing the season with a record of 14-2. They then made short work of the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets in the playoffs, before defeating the Atlanta Falcons in the Super Bowl for the second victory in their back to back championship. Terrell Davis was a key part of their success that season, rushing 392 times for 2,008 yards and 21 touchdowns.

Who Is The Best Football Player In The World 10 Reasons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Are Not the Greatest of All Time [GOAT] in Football

You are searching about Who Is The Best Football Player In The World, today we will share with you article about Who Is The Best Football Player In The World was compiled and edited by our team from many sources on the internet. Hope this article on the topic Who Is The Best Football Player In The World is useful to you.

10 Reasons Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo Are Not the Greatest of All Time [GOAT] in Football

For the best part of the last decade, two names have dominated world football (soccer) more than any others; Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. These great rivals have broken countless football records, scored insane number of goals and pushed each other all the way to greatness despite the fact that they are two very different football players, playing two very different styles in two very different roles for two different clubs. The only thing that really connects the two is the ocean of ability that separates them from the rest of the players in the world. There can be no question as to whether the duo belongs in the pantheon of football all-time greats anymore. Although any effort to determine the greatest footballer of all time is subject to generational bias, it should be noted that Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are not individually or collectively the greatest football player[s] of all time due to the following reasons;

Cristiano is not the best ‘Ronaldo’ to play the game: Despite his unparalleled achievement in and off the field of play, Cristiano Ronaldo is still not considered the best Ronaldo to have played the game. Ronaldo de Assisi (also known as Ronaldinho) and Ronaldo de Lima (the phenomenon) are the other ‘Ronaldos’ whose legendary attacking prowess is often compared to Cristiano Ronaldo’s. Ronaldo de Lima was a more explosive and complete striker who would have probably been the ‘World’s Best Striker Ever’ if he had stayed injury-free in his footballing career, while Ronaldinho was the entertainer who, at his peak, constantly wowed the footballing world. Cristiano Ronaldo is better than other ‘Ronaldos’ in terms of constituency over the years, phenomenal goal-scoring rates, overall fitness and prolonged career (due to low rate of injuries) but for sheer skill, explosiveness, superior technical ability, and the ‘wow’ factor, the two ‘Ronaldos’ are better than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Lionel Messi is not the best ever Argentine player: It is a well-known fact that for a footballer to be the best ever in the world, he has to be the best ever footballer in his country and sadly, Lionel Messi isn’t both. Lionel Messi is not the best football player Argentina has produced. That honor goes to Diego Armando Maradona. Maradona (widely regarded as one of the best football players ever) is a footballing legend that inspired Argentina to a world cup victory and S.S.C. Napoli (in the Italian Football League) to its first and second League title [Scudetti] in its history. He is the scorer of the world’s most dubious goal (the ‘Hand of God’ goal) and the FIFA Goal of the Century. There is virtually a cult around the player in Argentina. Diego Maradona (and Pele) is the benchmark for the illustrious South American nation when a new star comes on to the block. So, while Messi has dazzled on the European stage, passing milestone after milestone and picking up loads of awards, his countrymen regard him as the country’s second best football player ever.

Both players have never won the World Cup: Although the latter rounds of the modern-day UEFA Champions League would rival the FIFA World Cup in terms of quality, with talents from around the globe increasingly concentrated in the hands of an elite few, the World Cup still retains substantial symbolic value as a quadrennial competition which pit the best of one nation against the best of another. It is no secret Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have never won (or inspired their respective countries to win) the FIFA World Cup. Cristiano Ronaldo has won an European Cup (The Euros) with his home country, Portugal but has never been to the semi-finals or the finals of the World Cup while Lionel Messi was underwhelming in the 2014 world cup semi-final and final with his home country Argentina eventually losing to Germany. The World (and Messi) was shocked when he was named the best player and awarded the Golden Ball of the tournament. Lionel Messi is also a three-time runner-up in the Copa America competition with Argentina. Most football players such as Zinedine Zidane, Pele, Diego Maradonna, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo de Lima etc. often touted as the world’s best ever football player all played dominant roles in the World Cup tournament they eventually won. The same cannot be said presently of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

They are not Football’s best Goal-scorers ever: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are efficient, effective and phenomenal goal scorers boasting amazing goal per match ratio but they aren’t among the five best goal scorers in football history. Neither of them have scored up more than 700 goals in their respective careers so they cannot be in the company of great players such as Pele, Romario, Josef Bican, Ferenc Puskas (he has a FIFA goal-scoring award named after him), Gerd Muller. The rate of scoring of these legendary players is more impressive than that of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo given they ended their footballing careers with goal tallies well into the 800s. So if scoring goals are what makes footballers great, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, having better players boasting better goal tallies ahead of them, cannot be the greatest footballers of all time.

Both players have been accused of being criminals: They both have tax payment issues with the Spanish authorities (the country they reside and play in) and so have been accused of being criminals. After a lengthy trial that attracted so much publicity due to his status as a supremely gifted sportsman, Lionel Messi (and his father) was found guilty of not paying his taxes to the Spanish government, fined heavily and sentenced to two years in prison (he has since agreed to pay an increased fine rather than have a 21-month suspended prison sentence). His trial, guilty verdict, fine and (suspended) sentence damaged his credibility as a morally upright athlete who could do no wrong and that of his football club (FC Barcelona). Cristiano Ronaldo is also being investigated for tax evasion by the Spanish authorities, might be tried (or not), heavily fined and get a suspended prison sentence.

Their overall goal tallies are padded with too many penalties: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are the greatest goal scorers of their generation. They score obscene number of goals in a football season but almost half of the total goals scored both players have come from the penalty spot. In football, penalties are the easiest way to score because it involves only the designated penalty-taker and a goal keeper to beat. Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, being the designated penalty-takers of their respective club sides, always take every penalty kick awarded them or their teammates thereby increasing their goal tallies. In 2013/2014 Football season in England, Luis Suarez of Liverpool FC (before he moved to FC Barcelona to become a teammate of Lionel Messi) won the highest goal scorer award in the English Premier League and shared the European Golden Shoe award with Cristiano Ronaldo by scoring 32 goals in 33 games in open play without taking a single penalty. That is a record Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo do not yet hold.

They play for football’s most valuable clubs: Messi and Ronaldo play for super-clubs in Spain where the top sides score goals by the hatful. The second millennium’s new financial order unfortunately gave birth to the modern super team essentially creating a certain form of predictability in both domestic and continental leagues. Lionel Messi plays for FC Barcelona in Spain while Ronaldo plays for Real Madrid CF also in Spain. FC Barcelona and Real Madrid CF are extremely rich and dominant football clubs that can afford to buy and stockpile the best and most expensive football talent anywhere in the world and so Messi and Ronaldo are always surrounded and assisted by world-class players to aid in dominating continental club football thus raising their international profiles. Both clubs always have a slew of world-class players at their disposal which leads to utter domination in domestic (Spanish La Liga) and continental (UEFA Champions League) football competitions.

The benefit of playing in the Modern Era: It is almost impossible to compare players of different era in a game that has changed so much over the years. Great footballers like Ferenc Puskas, Alfredo di Stefano played in an era when the game was played at a tempo unrecognizably slower than in the modern era. That does not make them less great than Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The game played presently has changed because of changes in rules governing the game and the quality of footballs produced and used. Players in the modern era are also fitter, faster, and stronger than they have ever been, but players (especially defenders) are technically weaker than they have ever been. The Champions League’s expansions of the nineties is also an advantage to the modern player: having a group stage allows a margin of error that simply did not exist in the knock out style pre-1995 tournament. It has never been easier for attackers – Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo probably would never score 40-60 goals a season in the 1980s when the rules governing the game and footballs used didn’t benefits attackers (strikers), and defenders/defenses were littered with world-class talents.

They are a part of football’s rich history: We view the history of the game through our own national experiences, or at least we did until the modern era, where we can watch the Spanish league, Messi and Ronaldo every weekend. It is worth remembering that in the 1970s and even into the 1980s, most of Europe just watched the European Cup and UEFA Cup games of their own national teams. So, here is a little suggestion; the next time Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo score a breath-taking goal and someone on Twitter suggests the debate (on the greatest football player) is over, head to YouTube and spend ten minutes watching goals from Diego Maradona, Johan Cruyff, Pele, Ferenc Puskas, Roberto Baggio, Eusebio, Alfredo di Stefano and so on. There have been plenty of geniuses in the game, and Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are part of that rich football history.

Generational and positional bias in football: The hunt for the greatest football player in history is like that of the Holy Grail. All footballers (sportsmen) are products of their time. Due to football’s developmental stagnation relative to other sport and because there are so many different positions, and so many roles within those positions, it is hard to have a worthwhile conversation about who the best football player of all time is. Since the main objective of the game is to score a goal, the best goal scorers such as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will always be near the top of any list about the game’s best players.

Conclusion; Don’t kid yourself that there won’t be another player like Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, no-one thought they would see another player like Diego Maradona.

Senior Prom, Monday Night Football, Wet Tee Shirt Contest – Why You Should Dress For the Occasion

We never wore school uniforms. But, back then, we did have a dress code. According to our teachers – and our parents – dressing ‘properly’ would put us in the mood for school. Well, we never quite got in the mood for school, no matter how well-coded we may have been. Even so, we must admit that there was a certain amount of mood attached to our grungier after-school sneakers and jeans. They almost shoved us toward the basketball court. Or over the hill to play a little baseball.

So maybe the neat, pressed school stuff did keep us… well, restrained, anyway. And if sitting still (or reasonably so) can be construed as ‘in the mood for school,’ I guess we got as close as ‘suitable attire’ could force us to be. Which is to say that, much as we hate to admit it, what we wore mattered. And as far as we can see, it still does. Go to a Wall Street interview in your Levi jeans and Air Jordans and see how you make out. Of course, when you get to be CEO, it will probably be considered cool.

But what you wear is about more than simply what the world thinks of you. When a teenager dresses for Prom, even if she usually detests the dress-and-pumps thing, suddenly, on prom night, she actually wants to wear them. So maybe our teachers had a point. It’s not just Authority making demands on us. It’s US. Looking at ourselves in the mirror. Creating Who We Are at any given moment.

Ever notice the camaraderie of fans at a football game all wearing the same team jerseys? Heck, team jerseys even put you in the mood when you’re watching Monday night football on the sofa. Or – think about walking on the beach, waves gently lapping the shore, as you trudge along in your basic flannel business suit. And the more fun image, if not to your boss… although… well… we guess it all depends: you in your cubicle wearing a bikini.

And what would a wet tee shirt contest be if you wore a sweatshirt? But there’s an impact even beyond occasion. There’s simply the matter of What You Wear Making You Feel Good About You. Remember those fabulous lyrics from West Side Story? “I feel pretty, oh so pretty! I feel pretty and witty and bright! And I pity anyone who isn’t me tonight!” Now, Maria was all alone, looking in a mirror, as she sang. Because ‘being pretty’ was what she saw in herself. As a woman in love. Who knew she was loved in return.

Awwwww. Point is, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. Fortunately, you are the beholder. And the good news is that you are free to orchestrate that which you see. Through your Air Jordans. Or your pearl necklace. Or your NFL jersey. Or your black lace teddy. Even so, we need to remember that image is most definitely not all. We happen to love Andre Agassi. But we hated that commercial.

Exterior decoration not withstanding, the image we have of ourselves in our own minds is the image that really counts. That tells us – and the world – who we truly are. In a very real way, we dictate our image to the world. Sort of like a backwards mirror. How we see ourselves becomes how the world sees us. Because we are the world, aren’t we? If not us, then who?

So sometimes that perfect little dress, that #2 baseball shirt, the Brett Favre Vikings jersey you got (or gave) for that fortieth birthday… they make you smile into the mirror. And Son of a Gun if the whole darn world doesn’t smile right back at ya! Hey, you may not be what you wear. But, obviously, it can put you in the mood. The mood for what is up to you.

How Long Does A High School Football Game Last Homecoming Mums History Q & A

Homecoming Mums History Q & A

There are some long standing traditions that are unique to Texas football, and even more so, the fans. Take, for example, the high school homecoming mum. What is a homecoming mum? You may be thinking that the Homecoming Queen simply goes by another name in the South, or that her mother also plays a role in the festivities. Homecoming Queen and Homecoming Mum…would make sense. However, a mum refers to a unique flower collage that is deeply rooted in Texas football history.

This homecoming mum tradition has been alive for many years. So many years, that many Teens are unaware of the actual details that are responsible for the beginning. However, agreement surrounds the idea that Homecoming mums are a vital part of football season, and young girls look forward to the day that they will receive their first homecoming mum.

HISTORY:

The first homecoming mums were given in the early 1930’s at high school homecoming football games across Texas. Boys offered real chrysanthemum flowers to their dates in the form of a corsage. A chrysanthemum is a very large, rare, and beautiful flower, and to receive one was a sure sign of flattery as well as an unusual circumstance in those times.  Even early on, girls competed with one another to receive mums, as they were given out in limited quantities.  Mums were a sign of popularity, so girls that received mums confirmed their social status.

The styles and variety has evolved as silk flowers became available and concerns over wilting flowers dicipated.  The hefty silk mums could withstand hot glue, heavy attachments, and much more, so the addition of ribbons, streamers, stickers, and more became a way to personalize a mum for a special girl.  The desire to include special details- info on the student, the activities they are involved in, school colors, etc. created a unique masterpiece that could be saved as a special high school memory.  With this, the mums became bigger and better all of the time, and the desire for a custom homecoming mum became commonplace.

Understanding the Trend Today:

Most Texans are familiar with this tradition.  However, if you’re recently relocated to Texas, or have found yourself examining this tradition in a new light, you may be wondering if, or why, you (or your son) may be pressured to reciprocate in this tradition.  The following topics are intended to shed some light on current homecoming practices.

Who should give/receive a mum?

With high school students today, mums are typically given from a boy to a girl when they are attending the homecoming game or dance together (friends included), or if a boy simply wants to impress a girl for any reason. Today, girls often reciprocate with a male version of the mum, called a “garter”, which is worn on the arm of the young man.  It is much smaller than the homecoming mum.  Know that, if you plan to give a homecoming mum, you will very likely be receiving a garter in return.

Many high school students view the mum as imperative to their homecoming attire, and some students would prefer to stay home than attend the game than attend without one.  Remember, going “mum-less” can be viewed by the cruel high school crowds as an indicator of social status.  So, for this reason, mothers and friends (whether boys or girls) often give homecoming mums as well.

Girl can choose to receive a mum from anyone she chooses, and can even accept multiple mums.  Homecoming queens are often photographed wearing several homecoming mums, as she would be expected to receive five, six, or even seven based on her social status.  However, girls can also decline a mum in the same way they may reject a date.

Elementary and junior high aged students, parents of football players, allumni, and teachers may also wear homecoming mums to show team spirit, and excitement for the festivities.

When do people wear homecoming mums?

Students typically begin wearing homecoming mums the Friday before their high school football game. All schools are different, but most students wear them only on the day before the game. Students also typically wear homecoming mums during the football game AND after to their homecoming formal dance.  If you are new to Texas, check with a friend on the common practices in your community.

I want to impress my date. How should I go about purchasing a mum?

The current trends include ribbons (over 3 feet long) which graze the knee, and often include loud noise makers such as whistles and cow bells to use during the football game. More importantly, they includes important information about the student who receives it. For example, a custom mum (and one that a girl would like) might include her name, school name, or graduation year. Extra details would likely describe any “extra curricular” activities that she, and her date, are involved in.

Essentially, this is a keepsake that provides a snap shot of exactly where these two people are at during that one week of their high school life. If a couple is attending as friends, the mum could include general information and be of medium size. Hearts and other romantic details should be kept off so neither party gets the wrong impression from the event. On the other hand, it is fair game to go all out with the above details and any additional important details for a serious high school couple. Keep in mind, most girls save them afterwards, and pack them away as a memory along with high school year books.  She will notice if her mum was “mass produced” at a local grocery store or flower shop just as she will appreciate any personalized details.

What else should I know?

A homecoming mum can weigh as much as 12 pounds or more! Wow!  Often girls take mums off part way through the school day because they are so heavy, and exhausting, to wear!

The only real “down” side to homecoming mums is that the traditional materials that are used can fall apart. The traditional gift ribbons and metallic stickers can suffer adrenalin shock after being worn through crowded hallways and in the stands at the game. Consider how long you (or your date) would like the streamers to be so that the mum is functional and comfortable. Any bent or creased ribbons can take away from the appearance after the game is over, and, years later, your memory may not hold up.
