The Nature of Attitude – 3 Types of People

Many of our articles deal with individual performance optimization. In the fundamental factor – the basis for the successful implementation of all other factors of activity – is attitude.

Unfortunately, attitude is often dismissed as something we’re cursed (or blessed) and can’t change…or simply too immaterial to objectively tackle in the workplace.

All these attitudes about relationships are wrong and counterproductive! A person’s attitude (both a principled view of life and a specific view of various life challenges) is manifested in objective behavior and can change. It is not controlled by external forces, but transformed by the individual.

What is a relationship?

Attitude is the fundamental way we think, feel, and act — how we relate to the world around us. It determines the quality and effectiveness of all our thinking, feeling, and behavior … and thereby determines the positive or negative consequences of that behavior.

Relationship is one thing we can count on as a lifelong partner. Jobs and relationships come and go, but your relationship is always with you. You can’t take a vacation from yourself!

Attitudes are based on our expectations and perceptions – our definition of reality.

3 types of people — 3 different relationships

Each of these does the same thing, but notice their relationship:

Susan the viewer He likes the predictability and limited responsibility of his work. He feels comfortable when others make important decisions. When something unusual happens, he feels threatened and calls his manager for instructions. He is never sure about anything and has trouble keeping commitments.

Carl the critic gets frustrated at his job, but it at least gives him a chance to complain and vent his frustrations to all the “idiots” he’s dealing with. When faced with his mistakes, he makes excuses and blames others. He hates what his colleagues and customers have put him through. Everyone knows his negative opinions.

Player Paula sees his work as an opportunity to feel the excitement of competence and to solve progressive problems. He enjoys interacting with colleagues, clients and management. When she makes a mistake, she admits it to herself and to those affected by it…and then sees how she can fix it and learn from it.

Susan Spectator, Carl Critic, and Paula Player illustrate three very different ways of approaching life and dealing with others — three different attitudes:

  1. Spectators with a neutral attitude
  2. The audience observes the unfolding of life and others. They play it safe and try to avoid risks. The audience is afraid of change. They are often tired or detached. Their defining word is: Maybe. Their preferred action: Beach… Common phrases: I doubt, I can, I don’t know, and I hesitate.

  3. Critics with negative attitudes
  4. Critics comment on life and complain. They criticize after the fact, blame their “experts” and find fault with others. Critics are outraged by the change. They often appear depressed or pessimistic. Their defining word is: No! Their preferred action: Stop! Common phrases: I can’t, I can’t, No way, and You made me.

  5. Players with a positive attitude
  6. Players actively participate in life and take advantage of opportunities. They take risks and are willing to make mistakes. Players enjoy learning and change. They are usually confident and optimistic. Their defining word is: Yes! Their preferred action: Go! Common expressions: I can, I will, I believe, and I choose.

Most of us have some of each type and attitude in us. However, more often than not, a general approach prevails.

Activity

  1. Remember a invitation you have encountered in your relationships with others (whether in your current job, previous job, or in your personal life).
  2. Describe the situation, the other people involved, what was difficult and how you handled it.

    • What were your actions? Your thoughts? Your feelings?
    • What statements did you use? With what tone of voice?
    • What was your body language like? Your facial expression?
  3. Now step back and see what you wrote. Are you a The audience, criticism or Player (or some combination)?
  4. How could you face a similar challenge and solve it? the future?
