What Can You Do When You ‘Hit the Wall’ and Nothing Seems to Be Working?

Welcome to Monday

Some Mondays I wake up and no matter what I try to do, I just can’t go. Other times I get to Thursday and my energy just isn’t there.

I understand that being in business or selling can be like running a marathon. You have a lot going on all the time, and sometimes, like a long-distance runner, your body and mind can get overwhelmed and you “hit the wall.”

Dick Beardsley, a marathon runner, said of the “Wall” kick: “It felt like an elephant jumped out of a tree onto my shoulder and made me carry it the whole way.”

There are three types of energy that power your life. When one or more of these energy sources become depleted, you hit a “wall.” Fortunately, these sources of energy are interconnected and there are simple strategies to get you back on track.

Power plant 1 – chemical energy

This is the physical energy your body stores every day to run your body. Even when you’re doing nothing, your body is consuming large amounts of chemical energy that pumps your blood, digests your food, and maintains the cells that make up your body.

Power plant 2 – emotional energy

It is the energy of enthusiasm that brings joy to life. The smile of a child, the feeling of love, the happiness you feel when your football team wins. Everything you say and do affects your emotional energy, either positive or negative.

Power plant 3 – spiritual energy

This is the energy of creativity. When you set a goal that you don’t know how to achieve and you do, you are using mental strength. This is the energy of problem solving, decision making, report writing. In fact, your mental energy reserves are a major factor in the quality of your life.

Each of these energy sources is closely related to the other two.

  • Five minutes of uncontrolled anger (negative emotional energy) can burn as much physical energy as an eight-hour day.
  • A 30-minute walk (chemical energy) can generate the same amount of mental energy as a full day of seminars used to develop a sales plan for the coming year.
  • Getting a phone call (because you maybe sent them flowers?) from someone you love (emotional energy) just before a physical challenge or a tough mental task can replenish both of these energy sources.

When I “hit the wall” and nothing else works, I stop and ask myself, “Which of the three energy sources is pulling me down?”

Usually the answer is obvious.

  • Maybe I haven’t taken the time to build my physical reserve
  • Maybe I didn’t spend enough time with the people I care about
  • I set my goals in such a way that I could not achieve victory in this way.

Today’s questions and actions

Are there times when you hit a wall and feel an elephant on your shoulder? Here are some things you can do to help.

  1. Get out of the 9 to 5 mindset and decide “now is the time”. Stopping the workshop at 10am for a 30 minute walk is far more sensible than wasting a whole day of planning.

  2. Know your body chemistry. Start the day with a nutritious meal. Replenish your body chemistry regularly with a balanced diet so you can keep your physical energy at a high level.

  3. Build your emotional energy by spending time with people who value you. Stop and “smell the roses” and take time to enjoy your life.

The more energy you have, the happier and more productive you will be.
