Scheduling Youth Baseball Practice – Sample Schedule For Middle-School Aged Baseball Teams

One of the more difficult hurdles for a new baseball coach is one of the first issues he must address is the practice of baseball. The when, where, and how are questions that cry out for immediate attention, and if he allows it, could quickly bring the new coach to the brink of death.

Naturally, relying on your own experiences is the first pool of resources to start putting together a practice schedule and exercise program. If your experience is limited, then take the advice of your trainers, but think very, very hard before asking another trainer.

The minor leagues are known for being a gossip mill, and you don’t really need to be talking about how you got the team and you don’t even know where to start. It’s nobody’s business if you’re not a pedophile why you decided to become a trainer.

With that in mind, and the fact that I’m all about coaching and helping others coach, I’m going to put together a sample workout schedule guide for you to use, refer to, or discard.

Remember that training is important throughout the season, but especially before the season starts. Here are the building blocks where you’ll improve your team’s skills throughout the season and they’ll gain real-world experience in game situations. So you train more in the pre-season than in the season.

I always made a 3-day schedule, Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and tried to avoid weekends for my parents’ benefit. However, if bad weather cuts practice, don’t hesitate to schedule Saturday and Sunday practices.

Monday practice:

1. Players warm up by stretching and playing. Don’t allow players to throw long throws until the third or fourth practice, even though their arms are young, injuries can occur from “Too Much…Too Fast.”

2. On the field: Place all players in positions on the field. You will obviously find that some players are not suited to playing infield, but it is wise to expose players to different positions in situations where they are forced to for some unforeseen reason.

Hit any ground balls (at least 4) they throw to first, which will be passed to your catcher and he will throw the ball back to you to hit again.

3. Batting Practice: Have the players scatter into fielding positions, the catcher takes the BP in full gear and 1 hits while the other stands on the deck.

I recommend that the coach do batting practice for control purposes.

Let each shot hit 10 shots and finish by placing a bunt. Continue rotating the shots and player on the deck until all players have hit. Hopefully you have two catchers who will hit and then circle for the catch, getting practice hitting and catching.

Action on Wednesday

1. Always start practice by stretching and playing, then a few practice long throws.

2. Outfield: Place a player at each base that you will most likely play that position and have a catcher with you. Let the remaining players scatter around the field.

Spin, hit fly balls to the fielders and force them to throw back to the same base. Let that player throw the ball into the catcher’s net.

Hit at least three fly balls to each outfielder.

3. Go through Batting practice.

Friday Action:

1. Regular warm-up routine, your players should get used to the exercise and start automatically when they reach the throw.

2. Place the players in the designated positions that you think they will play during the season. Never hesitate to change or change positions and players, but you have to start somewhere.

3. One coach hits infield drills while the other hits fly balls to the outfield. All batted balls must be hit hard and not straight at the player as you are trying to push them into play.

4. Friday was always a new skill day. We taught running, stealing, banditry, there are 100 different subjects to hate. This is done with the participation of the whole team.

5. Kick practice.

This is a very simple but effective workout schedule and routine that you will of course modify as the team’s skill level increases. It addresses the basics of injury prevention, fielding skills, both ground balls and fly balls, and hitting.

Start the season with good practices like these and you will have a great year with your youth team.
