“Free as a Bird” (Poem by Ray Lewis)
You were not a bird, but you were born to be great.
turn the storm into a shining sun,
and move quickly to the brightest scene
write your own tale, fulfill your own destiny
so they praised you for the games in the depths of December,
when you led your flock south for warmer weather,
they called you their king, bound forever in purple,
but I see a heart that is as black as a crow’s feather.
You fought and fought to achieve your main goal,
You silenced your clowns, won the big battle
but in the street war, 2 lives were counted
and though you received the prize, you gave up your life
so trapped in your actions, with no way to escape,
you’ve escaped your bonds and now you fly free
you make fools of the whole nation with your good news,
but all i hear is the crow’s claim.
You now walk the skies as an acquitted criminal.
and eat your prey with rings in your teeth,
The demand of the world calls you an example and a legend
to forget your past lies and sins.
Who am I to judge, just a strong critic,
they say that this is half of the story, that I behave indecently
that it is all a ploy or a selfish ploy,
It’s not how you start, but how you finish
and it is true that I cannot judge because I am neither judge nor jury
But in the people’s court, I’ll take it one more time.
