1999 FIFA World Youth Championship – Flying Eagles Wobble and Fumble At Home

In 1999, Nigeria won the right to host the 12th FIFA World Youth Championship. That was the year; the flying eagles were shown “charm and fury”. They got off to an embarrassing start to their World Cup campaign on home soil, drawing 1-1 against Costa Rica with Julius Agakhova scoring the opener in the 20th minute, before facing Germany started to defeat them. 2-0. Ganiyu Shittu and Hashimu Garba scored the goals in the 69th and 81st minutes.

Their last group game was against Paraguay and they lost in front of a strong crowd that came to cheer them on. The match against Paraguay ended 2-1 in favor of Paraguay, with Ganiyu Shittu scoring a consolation goal in the 38th minute of the match. However, “Flying Eagles” managed to qualify for the 1/8 round by the skin of their teeth.

In the Round of 16, the Flying Eagles tried to draw with Ireland 1-1 with a goal from diminutive striker Pius Ikediya in the 70th minute. The game then went to penalty kicks and millions of Nigerians had their hearts in their mouths throughout the shootout. It eventually went the way of the Flying Eagles, who went down 5-3. Pius Ikediya, Gbenga Okunowo, John Aranka, Eddie Dombrae and Ganiyu Shittu all replaced their spot kicks. Republic of Ireland’s Thomas Heary misses a spot kick to set up a quarter-final tie between Nigeria and Mali.

The Flying Eagles had their work cut out for them as the Malians appeared to be too hot for their quarter-final clash at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium in Enugu, eastern Nigeria. Malians were so ruthless in the quarter-final clash that they lost 3-1 to the unfortunate Eagles who couldn’t fly when it mattered most. The main tormentor of the Flying Eagles was the enterprising midfielder of Mali, Seydou Keita, who would later become the winner of the Adidas Ballon d’Or award.

The defeat of the incredible Flying Eagles with the sacking of Dutch head coach Thijs Liebregts from the coaching staff of the Nigeria U-20 national team has created a lot of buzz in the sports world. The team had many opportunities, but they could not fully use their opportunities. Some of the notable players in this team are: Joseph Yobo, Rabiu Afolabi, Julius Agahowa, Haruna Babangida and late goalkeeper Sam Okoye.
