Football – The History Of The Heisman Award

At the end of each college football season, the award is presented to the college football player of the year as voted on by a panel of 941 members of the media and past winners. This award is called the Heisman Memorial Award. While this award is heavily promoted by the media and football fans around the world, here are some interesting facts that you may not know.

History

The Heisman Award was originally established by the Central New York Athletic Club in 1935. It is named after John W. Heisman, who was a member of the club. The actual trophy was created by former New York University football player Ed Smith in 1934.

The award was always presented at the Downtown Athletic Club until 2002. The club was located near the site of the World Trade Center towers that were destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. The club was forced to close in part due to financial problems as a result of 9/11.

Voting process

The voting process for the Football Heisman Award is done on a regional basis. The country is divided into 6 separate regions, in each region there is a mass media representative. This member then selects a select group of other voters, who may be football writers, reporters or television personalities, to vote.

Dividing the country into 6 regions helps ensure that there is no regional bias for any player. Currently, 941 members have voted. The award is given in December every year.

Prize winners

Football’s Heisman Award winners include mostly quarterbacks and running backs. In fact, 41 of the 71 Heisman Award winners are running backs, and 23 of them were quarterbacks.

Michigan’s Charles Woodson was the one and only defensive player to ever win the award. He did this in 1997. Although he also returned kickoffs and punts, he was primarily a defensive back.

Archie Griffin holds the distinction of being the only player in Heisman Trophy history to win the award twice. He did so in 1974 and 1975 while playing for Ohio State.

The two schools are tied for the most Heisman Trophy winners. Both USC and Notre Dame have had 7 Heisman Trophy winners in football, although Notre Dame has only won one in the last 40 years. Ohio State has 6 Heisman trophies.

What happened to some past winners?

While many Heisman Award winners in the NFL have Hall of Fame careers, the opposite has happened for many others.

Jason White, the 2003 winner, never played in the NFL. Archie Griffin, the only two-time award winner, had an uneventful football career in Cincinnati. Andre Ware, the winner in 1989, sat on the chair for 4 years and then retired.

Eric Crouch, the 2001 quarterback from Nebraska, never played in the NFL. Rashaan Salam, the 1994 winner, had several drug suspensions in a very short and troubled career. Perhaps the most infamous Heisman Award winner of all time is OJ Simpson. After having a very famous career with Buffalo Bill, he will always be remembered for his famous trial in the murder of his wife and Ronald Goldman.

Football fans everywhere love the Heisman football award. Everyone has their own opinion on who should be the winner. This has become an annual tradition that grows bigger every year.
