Youth Football – Improving the Stalk Block For Youth Receivers
More details about the Stalk block
One of the more difficult blocks for receivers to master is the base block, but with a few simple drill points and drills, you can get your players to do it on a regular basis. A base block is a block on the defensive back side of the receiver or slot, the purpose of which is to keep the defensive back out of the way of the carrier. Some coaches just want the blocker to protect the linebacker from the ball carrier, others like coach Ron Brown like his kids to chase the linebacker after contact.
In youth football, blocking in space is what separates the good teams from the great teams. A leg block is often the difference between an 8-yard gain and a 25-yard gain. It’s 70% attitude and commitment and 30% technique.
How to do it
The first step is to get the right angle of the base block to be sure and get leverage. If the defender is off the shoulder to the receivers, the receiver will attack the defenders inside the shoulder. If the defender is inside the shoulder to the receivers, he will attack the defenders outside the shoulder. If the play is on the other side of the field, the receiver must take a rare angle and attack defenders inside the shoulder.
Second, the receiver must maintain a 3-yard cushion with the defender as he runs his “route.” The first steps of the receivers must be at full speed so that the defender thinks first and drives the defender back. The longer you can keep this defender behind the pedal, the more distance you put between him and the ball carrier.
Once the cushion between the receiver and the defender is shorter than 3 yards, the receiver must slow down, gather himself and position himself to block the defender. He should lower his angle, keep his knees bent and be ready to move his legs to either side. Some people call it foot noise, what it does is make sure the receiver moves his feet to make sure he’s able to engage the defender.
Get the defender to come to the receiver and obey the direction. At this point, the receiver can use any technique to block the offense in space. Some prefer the receiver to make contact with the hands and release, reposition the contact and release, others are just looking for a “chin” type block, they just want the receiver to get in the way. We like our receivers to maintain contact after engaging the defender. We’re not looking for him to drive the defender downfield, but we do expect him to work with both hands and a bit of a shoulder and make sure he doesn’t get out of bounds.
Obviously, the legs are the key to this block. We do a lot of mirror type drills where the defenders go against the receivers and often the receivers put their hands behind their backs. The goal is to never get out by using quick feet to stay in front of the defender. We also do a lot of defensive drills to read and react. We put the receivers one by one with the defensive back, the receiver will signal the down block, leg block, smoke, go, lean or shot. Obviously, we’re working both sides of the ball in this drill, and we’re going to get a lot of stick block rappers with our receivers in the defensive back.
While this is a more difficult block due to the space issue, if the receiver sells the pass route and uses these techniques and drills, it is a doable block in youth football. Be sure and hold your recipients accountable for building this block. I tell my kids that they will never see the ball if they don’t consistently track the block well. Note that with the exception of Texas and Massachusetts, this block must be above the waist.
