Row in College – Who Can Row in College?

Who ranks in college?

If you love rowing and want to row in college, there’s a good chance you’ll find a place where you can be happy and successful academically, athletically, and personally. As a female student-athlete you have many choices, including NCAA Division I, II and III rowing schools, in addition to club programs. If you are a talented athlete, you may be attracted to rowing in college, even if you never rowed in high school. There are options for light oarsmen and coxswains, although your choices are more limited.

Choose between Division I, II and III schools

There are many college rowing programs of varying abilities. You may want top-level competition with a shot at competing for a national championship or racing at Henley Women’s Regatta in England, or you may be content with training less and competing at a lower level. No matter your ability, size or shape, there is a program for you.

There are approximately 140 women’s rowing programs supported by intercollegiate athletic departments at member institutions of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). They are further divided into NCAA Division I, Division II and Division III programs.

  • If you want to compete at a high level, you should start by looking at Division I schools. The competition in Division I is higher than in Divisions II and III, and so are the demands on the athletes.
  • Division II and III schools tend to be smaller, have a different environment, and offer a different college experience than many Division I universities.
  • Teaching time in division II and III schools is much less than in division I.
  • Only Division I and II schools offer rowing scholarships.

Every school is different and has its pros and cons. It is important that you do your research and take a close look at everything that a prospective school has to offer.

Light boats

Most collegiate lightweight rowing is done only at the club level, but there are several lightweight programs that are supported by their respective athletic departments. Talented track and field rowers can be recruited to row at the open level at colleges that may not have a supported track and field team.

Currently the main supported programs are:

  • Wisconsin
  • Princeton
  • Stanford
  • Harvard (Radcliffe)
  • Georgetown
  • Bucknell has had some recent success in the lightweights, but unlike the others listed here, does not specialize in lightweight rowing, but recruits athletes who may also be lightweights.
  • Women’s lightweight rowing is not an NCAA-sponsored sport, and its annual national championships are held in conjunction with the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRAs) men’s championships, rather than the NCAA women’s championships.

Electronic book College Row – Admissions Guide for Female Student-Athletes has a proper way to see which college teams are in the lightweight division and how they compare not only to each other but also to the open weight crews.

Lightweight rowers must be under 7:40 for the standard 2k ergometer test to be recruited by one of the top lightweight programs. You still have a very good chance if you are a 7:50 with good race experience and great academics.

During your senior year of high school you need to make sure your weight stays at or below 132 pounds or the top lightweight programs won’t be interested in recruiting you.

Coke

There are chances that good coxes will be recruited. Obviously, coaches recruit more rowers to their teams than coxes, but they are always looking for coxes who can make a positive impact on their team.

  • You need to actively market your skills and demonstrate your leadership qualities when applying for a job at the college of your choice.
  • Send your audio tapes to college coaches who should show how you practice and how you call both head races and sprint races.
  • You should include information from your team’s official coxswain evaluation to show how you can present yourself to a potential college coach.
  • Ask your high school coach to recommend you to college coaches who are interested in you.
  • Make sure your weight is regularly under 115 pounds.

Walking and boating

You don’t have to row in high school to row in college. There are many opportunities for highly athletic women to attend most college rowing programs. Good high school athletes can be recruited into rowing regardless of previous rowing experience. Electronic book College Row – Admissions Guide for Female Student-Athletes contains a link for more information on “college prep” coaching services for non-professional rowers to train in college.

College Row – Admissions Guide for Female Student-Athletes is a complete guide to the women’s college rowing admissions process. It contains most of what you need to know and the steps you need to take to successfully apply for college.
