Antonio Gates – 2003 Draft Day Picks

Antonio Gates was born on June 18, 1980 in Detroit, Michigan. From the time Gates was a child, it was clear that he would be a great athlete in one sport or another. Standing at 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighing 260 pounds, he has all the physical skills an NFL tight end could need. When you add that to the mental aspect of his game, it’s no wonder why many consider him the best tight end in the game.

Gates is a little different than any other player you see in the NFL. Before his rookie season in the league, he had not played in an organized football game since high school. Gates decided he wanted to attend Michigan State University to play both basketball and football, but decided to transfer when he was told by then-coach Nick Saban that he could only play football. Next, this led him to Eastern Michigan University and then two junior colleges until he finally settled on Kent State University in Ohio.

After his college basketball career ended, NBA scouts felt that at 6’4″ he wasn’t big enough to play in the big leagues. Instead, he focused his energy on preparing for the NFL. It was attended by about 20 teams and the San Diego Chargers were so impressed that they signed him to a contract.

After a sluggish season in 2004, Gates quickly became an offensive threat. Over the next three seasons, he caught 241 passes for 2,989 yards and 32 touchdowns. It was good enough to land him in the Pro Bowl all three years, as well as establishing himself as a top offensive threat. For a guy who didn’t play college football, Gates is doing well in the NFL.
