West Virginia vs Missouri – Good For College Football
There is still a week left in both Missouri and West Virginia’s season, and in that week Missouri has to beat a strong Oklahoma team and West Virginia has to avoid Pitt. But if both teams win on Saturday, they’ll be No. 1 and No. 2 in the polls, and the national title race for college football will be good for fans of other schools like Ohio State and others. It’s sad how they should be in the national title game, even after losing to incredible opponents throughout the season and other pitfalls.
Why would WVU face Mizzou be good? Because maybe, just maybe, it will get some of the people who have a real playoff system for a national title.
Every year I hear the grumbling and moaning of teams complaining about how they should be considered. But this year, the field is fevered by a large number of disgruntled fans of other legitimate title contenders from OSU, LSU, USC to Kansas, to name just a few.
Mizzou (then #4) beats Kansas (then #2) and Missouri moves to #1, while Kansas fans criticize the drop to fifth and have no hope for a national title? Hey, I’ve never liked the selectors punishing a quality team for playing and losing to a quality team. But it’s not like the dropout is inexplicable and Kansas should be ranked lower than Mizzou. What surprises Kansas fans is that they are currently behind the 10-2 Georgia Bulldogs, who weren’t even in their minds “good enough” for their conference title game.
Well, maybe. Yes, the Bulldogs have two losses. One of them was the Gamecocks, who always want to play anyone in the country and are a tough team every year. The other was underrated at the time, but now #14 Tennessee. They then beat #16 Alabama, then #11 Florida, then #18 Auburn, and then #23 Kentucky. Regardless of what you believe, they got that #4 ranking.
LSU fans were pissed because after losing to Arkansas they fell from first to seventh behind Ohio State, Georgia, Kansas and Virginia Tech and are so far out of title contention that their only way to get to the game this year is to buy tickets. . The slump isn’t so dire considering it was their second loss of the season and came against an underrated opponent.
Then there are Ohio State fans because they still believe the Buckeyes are the best team in the country. Maybe so, but last year was thought to be the same, and it didn’t work out the way OSU fans were hoping. This year they lost to Illinois, who despite beating two top-five teams also lost twice to ranked teams, as well as a very questionable Michigan squad.
Hawaii fans? I don’t really feel your pain but I think you must be above 12th. I’d put your team in 8th place if I had a say. Listen, if the Conference USA champions were to fail, would anyone in their right mind say they deserved a shot at the title? No. Well, the WAC is in the same league as the conference.
Mizzou’s only loss so far was at the hands of No. 6 Oklahoma, who they have to play again on Saturday. They beat an overrated No. 25 Nebraska team, a strong No. 24 Texas Tech team (who beat No. 2 Oklahoma at the time), as well as No. 2 Kansas. Also remember, Missouri didn’t even have a seat to start the season! That tells you they made a serious impression along the way. Missouri is probably the best story of the season pending the outcome of Saturday’s games.
West Virginia? Well, their only loss was to a ranked South Florida team that was undefeated until their own demise. Remember, this is an SFU team that is ranked #2 in the BCS after this win. WVU also lost to #25 (and possibly higher-ranked) Rutgers, then #22 Cincinnati, and most recently #20 UConn, which is definitely not as much of a team weakness as some naysayers would have you believe. . They also beat Louisville, which despite not currently being a contender, was picked very highly in the preseason, and whose air attack gives it the best defense in the NCAA.
So, before anyone starts freaking out about not being where they deserve to be right now, just remember that we can all “so-and-so” from “so-and-so” who they beat “so and so”, let’s go through it. “such and such” scenarios, you want. After all, it’s just a wash. You can sit there as an OSU or LSU fan and bellyache about how neither Missouri nor West Virginia can beat you if you’re in the national title game. And you probably thought the same about Illinois and Arkansas when they played you, too. But we’ll see how well that theory worked, eh?
So Mizzou would be good against West Virginia for the championship series. And it would be even better if the “big boys” were locked up every year for the next five or six years, and we’d see teams like that continue through their first and second seasons.
If so? Well, you’ll see many schools and conferences fighting against the playoffs today go along with the idea of such a system. It’s not fun to watch from the outside. Of course all you’ll hear from these people criticizing WVU’s potential play of Mizzou in the title game, IF it happens, will be about how the play is illegal and the BCS is broken… but only this year. When they win, it is of course legal.
But don’t worry. Mizzou and West Virginia have yet to win each other. But what if they don’t, and a team like Ohio returns to the dance floor? Well, it only prolongs the establishment of a real and meaningful playoff system.
