Baseball in a Zero Gravity Environment – Playing Baseball in a Space Colony Considered

It’s hard to say what they’ll call it in the future, baseball. After all, if you play baseball in a space colony, is it really baseball or space ball? Imagine hitting a ball in zero gravity, when you hit it there is nothing to slow the ball down. In other words, every time you hit the ball, you hit it out of the park and into the house. Obviously, you were going to run out of balls soon, so it was time for the futurists to think about playing baseball in space.

Because it’s one of America’s favorite pastimes, and because the United States is on the leading edge of space exploration, you know we’re going to have colonies someday, and those colonists want to play baseball. They are not content to just watch baseball games on Earth televised on Mars in their space colony. I was thinking about this the other day, trying to figure out how to build baseball stadiums on a fish colony or a Mars colony.

You couldn’t build big stadiums because it would take up too much space and it would be too hard to fill it with oxygen. Players could play outside, but they needed special breathing equipment, and with the lower gravity, they could certainly hit the ball more, so the baseball field had to be bigger, right?

What if they play in a smaller environment? What if they played inside a small dome, not much bigger than the actual diamond in the center of the baseball field? Apparently, the dome can record the speed of the ball’s impact to the side and determine if the ball has left the stadium or not by calculating the impact speed and the kinetic energy behind the ball at the time of impact and the angle as well. It can be a way to play and we have this technology now.

Some people believe that the future of baseball will be more of a sophisticated Wii or Kinect game in an augmented reality situation. Yes, this is another possibility. Baseball cages won’t be difficult to place, and combining it with augmented reality will give the space colonists the feeling that they’re playing baseball. But somehow I guess people want to play a full game of baseball in a full field.

Will the space colonists be satisfied with a different design, or will they want to play outside the surface of the planet on a level playing field with a real baseball diamond? Actually, I hope you consider all of this and think about it.
