5 Ways to Become a Better Footballer (Soccer Player)

Football (or football as the “non-British” refer to it as) is the most popular sport in the world. Millions of people play at various levels every day. Most people play for fun, others professionally, but the goal of the game is almost always the same – WIN! Throughout this article, I’ll suggest ways to become a better soccer player (and thereby increase your and your team’s chances of winning games). All suggestions will improve your game, but some will take longer to “bloom” than others. Here goes:-

FITNESS: Watch the top footballers and you will see that they generate a lot of movement for 90 minutes and often run for 10-15km. This requires a high level of cardiovascular fitness. It takes dedication and discipline to achieve such sophistication. Another sport where the participants have a higher level of fitness than football players is probably boxing (maybe not always the heavyweights!). So my suggestion to improve your fitness is to train like a boxer! Not in sparring etc, but by getting up early (ideally between 5-6am) and putting in a session. This should ideally include a distance run followed by cardiovascular exercises such as jumping jacks, star jumps, etc. Ideally, I recommend that your session be at least 1 hour, at least 4-5 times a week. Training that early kicks your metabolism into high gear for the day, and mentally it gives you a sense of accomplishment that should keep you motivated for the day ahead.

PURPOSE! Get up at 5:30, 5 times a week and complete a 4-5km run, followed by 5 x 20 push-ups, 5 x 20 crunches, 5 x 40 star jumps, 5 x 20 burpees, then PLANK- keep it as long as possible. it is possible. Tip: It may seem difficult at first, but once you get into the routine, it becomes easy. Keep a training outfit next to your bed and make up your mind to get out of bed as soon as your alarm goes off. Don’t think about what you are going to do, JUST DO IT!

DIET: You are what you eat/drink. You wouldn’t put the wrong fuel in your car, so why put it in your body? Your performance is affected by what you eat/drink – in the short and long term. Therefore, your general diet should be well balanced with large potions of green vegetables and salad. Avoid junk foods that you know are bad for you – I don’t need to name these foods, you already know them, but they taste so good! Right? ‘Garbabge’ – they taste good when consumed, but how do you feel after your taste buds are back to normal – I guess it’s not great! Improving anything requires discipline and often sacrifice. Avoid junk food and the benefits will far outweigh the “quick fix” pleasure of these foods.

Your water intake should be high – you should never feel thirsty as this is an early sign of dehydration. Replace the consumption of carbonated drinks, tea and coffee with water. Drink a minimum of 2 liters and a maximum of 5 liters per day (depending on body size and intensity of exercise). Always carry water with you, don’t leave your body dehydrated!

PURPOSE! Drink 2-5 liters of water every day and avoid carbonated drinks, tea and coffee. Eat a portion(s) of green vegetables/salad or fruit with each meal. Eat every 2-4 hours with fruit/salad/vegetables or nuts. Completely eliminate junk food from your diet. Tip: Discipline and dedication is another key. You don’t become an extraordinary football player by doing simple things!

TEMPERAMENT AND FOCUS: Temperament and focus before, during and after the game is a key part of improving a soccer player. Before playing, you need to focus on what the overall goal is. This focus must be strong and constant throughout the world. This should not scare or frustrate you, but ultimately guide you to success. If you make a mistake or miss an opportunity, it shouldn’t affect your focus because your goal is still the same. It is unlikely that your overall goal was to score at that moment or not to make that mistake at that moment. So focus on what you can achieve in the remaining time, there will be plenty of time to review your performance after the game is over.

Finally, when the game is over, focus on winning or losing honor. It will not only make you a better footballer, but a better person. Goal!: Take 15-30 minutes before the game to focus on what you really want to achieve. Be clear about your outcome. Many times people fail because they don’t know what they want to do.

Do the simple things well and often: Not every footballer can do the things that Cristiano Ronaldo, Zidane Zidane or Lionel Messi can do. However, all soccer players can learn basic skills often and well. I’m not trying to eliminate the ‘flame’ and extravagant flair, but slow it down. Learning to play short passes accurately and 100% directly is a huge advantage for any player. Great players like Paul Scholes and Claude Makelele are experts at easy things to do well. This is something that all players should embrace.

PURPOSE! Practice short passes, positioning, hitting, tackling, etc. often and for long periods of time. Many players believe that once they’ve mastered a technique, they don’t need to practice it again – when in fact mastery and improvement come from repeated repetition of a skill already learned. This kind of dedication and commitment ensures that you will be ready at the crucial moments of the game when it is important to execute a skill or technique.

LEARN FROM THE BEST: Why reinvent the wheel? If you want to become the best soccer player, compare the best soccer player. They may have natural talent, but getting to the level they did is no accident. If you want to get to the level of a certain player(s), copy what they do on a regular basis (the beauty of benchmarking is that you can get the positives and all the negatives of the player from remove it!). With footballers living their lives in the media spotlight and all kinds of information openly available online, verification has never been easier.

PURPOSE! Choose world-class players that you will admire both on and off the field. Gather information about their diet, training methods and fitness ideas. Explore their movement and all-round play in a variety of games. Record the games they played very well and analyze their qualities. Perhaps contact them directly for advice and tips – if done nicely, with your reasons for contacting them clearly stated, they should be more than happy to oblige.

Combine all of the above with belief and you will definitely become a better soccer player.
