5 Ways to Become a Better Footballer (Soccer Player)

Football (or football as the “non-British” refer to it as) is the most popular sport in the world. Millions of people play at various levels every day. Most people play for fun, others professionally, but the goal of the game is almost always the same – WIN! Throughout this article, I’ll suggest ways to become a better soccer player (and thereby increase your and your team’s chances of winning games). All suggestions will improve your game, but some will take longer to “bloom” than others. Here goes:-

FITNESS: Watch the top footballers and you will see that they generate a lot of movement for 90 minutes and often run for 10-15km. This requires a high level of cardiovascular fitness. It takes dedication and discipline to achieve such sophistication. Another sport where the participants have a higher level of fitness than football players is probably boxing (maybe not always the heavyweights!). So my suggestion to improve your fitness is to train like a boxer! Not in sparring etc, but by getting up early (ideally between 5-6am) and putting in a session. This should ideally include a distance run followed by cardiovascular exercises such as jumping jacks, star jumps, etc. Ideally, I recommend that your session be at least 1 hour, at least 4-5 times a week. Drink a minimum of 2 liters and a maximum of 5 liters per day (depending on body size and intensity of exercise). Always carry water with you, don’t leave your body dehydrated!

PURPOSE! Drink 2-5 liters of water every day and avoid carbonated drinks, tea and coffee. Eat a portion(s) of green vegetables/salad or fruit with each meal. Eat every 2-4 hours with fruit/salad/vegetables or nuts. Completely eliminate junk food from your diet. Tip: Discipline and dedication is another key. You don’t become an extraordinary football player by doing simple things!

TEMPERAMENT AND FOCUS: Temperament and focus before, during and after the game is a key part of improving a soccer player. Before playing, you need to focus on what the overall goal is. This focus must be strong and constant throughout the world. This should not scare or frustrate you, but ultimately guide you to success. If you make a mistake or miss an opportunity, it shouldn’t affect your focus because your goal is still the same. It is unlikely that your overall goal was to score at that moment or not to make that mistake at that moment. So focus on what you can achieve in the remaining time, there will be plenty of time to review your performance after the game is over.
