Taking Responsibility for Your Actions
What does this mean?
Why is it so hard for us to accept responsibility for our actions? There is a story of two parents with two children who attended 5 schools within a 20 mile radius until 10th grade because they claimed the schools were terrible and the teachers were kind. At what point will these parents accept responsibility for involving their children in the problems they have experienced?
We all like to feel important and to have others think highly of us. Some people develop a higher opinion of themselves than others. These tendencies act to trap us in what many call “denial,” which creates a false sense of self and an inability to tell the truth about ourselves. It then becomes painful to accept that mistakes are possible and when they happen, the first reaction is to point the finger at someone else. We refuse to think objectively and do not accept any interference for our actions.
Inability to accept responsibility for one’s actions and behavior is a result of insecurity. By accepting responsibility, a person feels they are admitting weakness, incompetence, or the possibility of losing the respect of others. This can cause them to lose their sense of worth and importance.
Conversely, taking responsibility leads to respect. We can’t be perfect all the time, we all make mistakes. When we accept responsibility, we accept guilt for our actions, and we also accept responsibility for improving our lives. Accepting responsibility is a measure of self-esteem, the level of their security and a real sign of strength and courage. It empowers you to develop in a way that will bring you great rewards and achievements in your life.
Who do you respect more, someone who takes responsibility for their actions, is consistent with it and promises to do better in the future, or someone who is responsible for any interference in situations that are known, always refuses?
Accepting responsibility is a sign of personal growth and maturity. This is definitely not a sign of weakness.
Consequences of not taking responsibility
When you fail to accept personal responsibility for your actions, a number of things happen over time. Consequences do not necessarily lead to goal achievement and success in life. The signals you send to your mind can come back to disrupt your progress.
One of the negative consequences that follows is an exaggerated sense of self, which makes it difficult to communicate with others. Then you risk getting involved in conflict situations and criticism of others. Because your sense of self-importance is exaggerated, your expectations of others are unrealistic, and you become impatient, intolerant, and demanding. With this attitude, you act as a repellant for others and find it difficult to gain their cooperation. Your relationships can suffer and soon few people want to be around you.
When it is difficult to accept responsibility for your actions, you often feel insecure. This insecurity can lead to doubts about one’s own abilities, which lowers one’s self-confidence. In this state of mind you have a heightened need to always be right to compensate for how you feel. You defend every action you take, right or wrong. It compounds the already existing problem of the inability to accept personal responsibility and further reinforces this behavior.
When this habit of denying personal responsibility is maintained, your character can slowly change. You may tend to become a person who is irresponsible, abandoning, dependent on others, anxious, unhappy, hopeless, angry, stupid and rebellious. These qualities do not contribute to success. They can eat away at your ability to achieve your best.
Check your life today. Can you accept responsibility for your actions?
Reasons for not being able to accept personal responsibility
There are many people who develop this tendency who cannot accept personal responsibility for their actions. Let’s take a closer look at some of the reasons for not being able to master this trait.
1. Feeling insecure. – There are some people who may have grown up in a very chaotic environment where they were constantly being kicked, yelled at, or emotionally abused. There are some who grew up in a poor environment and grew up feeling inferior or were raised by parents who felt inferior. Someone who didn’t get a lot of attention, positive reinforcement, or recognition growing up is always underestimating themselves. These conditions can lead to a lack of confidence in one’s abilities and feelings of low self-esteem.
2. Pride.– People become arrogant for several reasons. It can be inherited – some people know very little about humility. Others are so confident that they become completely self-centered and see themselves as infallible and infallible. There are those who are so insecure that their pride is a way to compensate for their insecurity. They think they have to be superior or superior to others.
3. The problem.– Some people who feel they are victims of racial discrimination, intolerance or narrow-mindedness are always on guard or on the sidelines. They feel that they do not get the recognition they deserve and feel that others are standing in the way of their progress. This creates a feeling of insecurity that results from the inability to accept responsibility for one’s actions. They do not accept responsibility for their actions.
