Understanding REM Sleep – Rapid Eye Movement and the Other Stages of Sleep

When we sleep, we go through 5 stages of sleep: stages 1 to 4, called non-REM sleep, and stage 5, called REM sleep. REM stands for rapid eye movement and describes the activity of our eyes during this stage of sleep. It is during rapid eye movement sleep that our bodies are thought to regenerate and it is said that without this stage of sleep we would die. This is thought to be because if we starve ourselves of REM sleep, our brain sends a signal that prompts our body to jump into REM faster the next time we fall asleep. This is the brain’s way of trying to make up for lost REM sleep the last time – a form of self-defense.

Sleep occurs mostly in this stage of sleep. The average person usually spends about 2 hours of their sleep sleeping – not that we know for sure why we sleep. Sigmund Freud believed that dreams are a kind of safety mechanism – our brain’s way of letting go of all our unconscious desires. It wasn’t until 1953 that scientists began to look more closely at REM sleep and dreaming. It was then that they discovered that most of our dreams occur during this stage of sleep.

Interestingly, most birds and mammals have signs of REM sleep, but reptiles and other cold-blooded animals do not.

At the beginning of REM sleep, the brain sends signals to different areas, which are eventually transferred to the cerebral cortex – the area of the brain responsible for thinking, organizing information and general learning. Signals are also sent that turn off neurons in the spinal cord. This causes the temporary paralysis that we experience during this stage of sleep. This paralysis prevents people from achieving their dreams – although it does happen.

In these rare cases, when someone acts out a dream, it is called REM sleep behavior disorder (RSBD). If someone is suffering from RSBD, it can be very dangerous for the patient as well as for others. For example, suppose a person suffering from RSBD had a dream about a football match; they can stand up and start running or run their arms around the motions of throwing a football.

Research shows that REM sleep helps develop the part of the brain used in learning – which may explain why children spend more time in REM than adults. It is also believed to affect the way mental skills are learned. One such study proved that participants learned a skill and then deprived the first group of non-REM sleep and deprived the second group of REM sleep. After waking up, the first group was able to recall the learned skill, while the second group was not.

Some sleep experts hypothesize that the brain receives random signals throughout the stages of REM sleep and tries to make sense of them. The result of interpreting this scattered brain activity is what we know as sleep.
