T-Shirt Printing Tips – How To Create Your Own Personalized Shirts Online

T-shirt printing – 3 things to keep in mind first. These three inexpensive tips are easy to follow, easy to use, and will give you great satisfaction when wearing your own shirts.

Let’s start with the memory end. Instead of rushing out and ordering shirts to print online I suggest you start with the end in mind.

Why do you want to print a shirt? Is it for work or for a birthday party? Maybe it’s for a quick run or just as a gift for someone? Could it be a souvenir from a recent trip?

Each of the above events can lead to choosing different clothes to wear in mind. Maybe the climate around you dictates what you wear. It is important to keep this in mind when deciding whether to print a design on shirts. A coat as a summer gift may not be as acceptable as a crew neck t-shirt. So let’s get started!

Tip 1: Why do you want to print your own shirt?

This is an important question because it leads us to the purpose of the shirt, the fabric it is made of, and whether it is a jersey or caddy for winter wear or a sleeveless t-shirt or turtleneck for a hot summer event.

Let me give you three examples here to show you how important this planning stage is before you start randomly shopping for shirts online.

Example One! Imagine you’re planning a night out with the boys on a recent Saturday. It’s all about the groom because of his big day with the guys. A group of friends decide that the theme will be around the groom’s football team.

The decision is that everyone wears a t-shirt printed with the characters of walking idols in a twist. Each walking player is rendered as a cartoon character instead of using player images. It could be a great party with even more great shirts. Get a graphic designer to do some character sketches for the whole party.

Second example! You have an outdoor event that revolves around fitness. Your fitness club needs shirts with logos printed on the front and back and on the sleeves. The club wants a polyester shirt and the shirts should be cost effective. Now, since the shirts are not cotton, I suggest that you consider screen printing the logos and designs on the t-shirts instead of digitally printing the images. To get the best prices, most printers recommend printing at least 20 shirts at a time. So once you have your shirts sorted, you need to move on to tip #2 to print quality shirts.

Third example! Imagine you are planning a birthday party for a 6-year-old girl. There are 30 kids coming and you want the shirts to match the theme of the party. You can either get a t-shirt or a shirt that is suitable for children. Bulk orders will be cost-effective for you, as most printing companies offer discounts for large orders. Once you know what its purpose is, move on to tip #2 below.

Once the shape of the shirt is known, now is the time to print what you like on the hem. We have a choice of images, designs or text. Here we focus on the image or photo that we print on the garment. This leads us to Tip #2.

Tip 2: Which image sizes are best for printing?

I find that most people who come to me to print their t-shirts don’t have the correct photo size. What most people do is they get free images from Google or Facebook. Although these graphics look good on a small screen, they are rarely the right size to print on a very large surface, such as a shirt or jumper.

The images from the internet are small in size and are approximately 96 dpi or approximately 5 cm by 5 cm in size. These images will not be large enough to even look good in the breast pocket of your business jacket.

If you tried to stretch the image on the back or front of the tee, you would get a pixelated printed image due to the low quality of the image used.

The solution goes for large file size images. The recommended size for good images is at least 300 dpi or about 30 cm by 30 cm in size. What was mentioned above, three times. These are large files and if stretched, easily produce high quality printed shirts when printing graphics onto garments.

There are many sites that offer great images for a small fee. Here are 3 paid sites I recommend:

  1. SHUTTERSTOCK.com

  2. GETTYIMAGES.com.au

  3. DEPOSITPHOTOS.com

Some free sites to get your designs are:

  • BURST by SHOPIFY

  • UNSPLASH

  • PEXELS

Useful points to keep in mind when choosing an image.

Always make sure you don’t use images without the permission of the person who created them. Google these terms below to make sure you choose the right images without any problems.

What is Creative Commons? Creative Commons is a non-profit business group that helps spread and exploit creativity and knowledge through free tools that are legal to use. Now, use under Creative Commons licenses includes using the images in full as you wish to use them without attribution to only allowing certain uses and modifications to the images used. Make sure you understand the licenses before using the images if you are looking for free graphics on the net.

What is public domain? Works in the public domain are those whose copyright has expired, been lost, or is no longer enforceable. Finding something online doesn’t mean it’s in the public domain. Again, it is your responsibility to make sure you choose copyright-free images.

What are royalty free images? Most free images are not necessarily free. In many cases, all you have to do is purchase the images for a one-time fee so that you have the right to use the image for your own purposes. You are allowed to use the images as often as you like. The “free” in “royalty-free” just means that you don’t have to pay royalties to the owner of the image every time you use it. Tip 3: How should I choose the right shirt color to choose?

We decide what the shirt will be used for. These could be the pool party we talked about earlier, or it could be a team event for a local fitness club or even a 5-year-old’s birthday party.

Then we went and got some great images from the internet using the free or paid sites I mentioned above. So the last step is to choose our t-shirt type and brand for our event soon.

If it’s a night in a cooler climate, we should consider using either a full tee shirt or even a hoodie or jumper to print your photos on. For warmer tropical climates, use a sleeveless shirt if it’s a beach holiday, or a half-length shirt with a crew cut for comfort. Good brands are AS COLOR or GILDAN.

Make sure the shirts are 100% cotton as they give better printed shirts. It is much more convenient to wear them.

Choose the colors of the shirts!

Now we move on to choosing the colors of the clothes you want to print on. Always use contrasting colors as your guide.

What do I mean by that? If you have images of lighter or darker colors, go for a lighter coat. Avoid using a dark image on a black or navy blue shirt. Choose a white shirt or a lighter shade of blue to print the images on. Your print on Tees will stand out and you will be very pleased with the end result.

Conclusion! In short, we’ve gone through the t-shirt printing process to determine why or where you’ll wear it. Then we found the appropriate images for this event. Finally, we looked for a t-shirt that has the right color to match the printed shirts to get the best results after printing the t-shirts. I hope these tips help you make custom printed shirts.
