Meet the Nation’s Most Statistically Incredible Team – The University of Washington Huskies

University of Washington football fans cheered Saturday (10-13-07) as the Arizona State Sun Devils fell to Seattle and extended their winning streak to 7 with a 44-20 second half victory. The Sun Devils outscored Washington 21-0 in the third quarter and 31-3 in the second half, which is a good thing because if the game had ended at halftime, Washington would have won 17-13.

Here’s the problem with the young, inexperienced Washington Huskies: they played a terrible 3rd quarter and haven’t learned how to win yet.

This statistic won’t mean much if you know this:

Washington took a 7-3 lead over 10th-ranked Ohio State before losing 33-14 in Game 3. It was tied at 10-10 at the half with then-No. 27 UCLA and lost its Game 4 44-31.

Washington was leading No. 1 Southern Cal 17-14 at the time and lost its Game 5 27-24. They then led No. 12 Arizona State 17-13 at the half before losing 44-20 in Game 6.

You better believe Sun Devil coach Dennis Erickson was sweating more than bullets after watching redshirt quarterback Jake Locker go for a 32-yard touchdown run with 4:11 left in the first half to give Washington a 17-13 lead.

Do Husky fans realize that if each of these games ended at the half, Washington’s record would be 5-0-1 instead of 2-4? Washington will have an undefeated record after beating Syracuse 42-12 on the road and beating No. 22 Boise State 24-10 in its first two games.

Please don’t be secondary (as crazy as it is sometimes) and remind me that the game lasts 60 minutes and only the final score counts. To do so would be to ignore the point I am making. It’s fair to say the Huskies are coming out of the locker room to start the second half of their last 4 games.

Why this is happening, coach Ty Willingham does not know. He is quoted Tacoma News Tribune (post 10-14-07) said: “Obviously it’s hard to talk about because I don’t have a solution.”

Willingham, hitherto a man of integrity and integrity, is also honest. Less than 1% of all college football coaches publicly echo Willingham’s admission.

One thing’s for sure: Whatever Willingham and his coaching staff say or don’t say to the Huskies players at halftime, it’s not working well enough and needs to change.

Don’t tell me that the same Huskies players who play over their heads with grit and enthusiasm in the first half are brain dead and numb in the second half. I’d love to be a bee on the wall in the Washington locker room at halftime and see what kind of stinging comments are being made. As a certified Monday morning advocate and Monday morning coach, these will be the first words out of my mouth at halftime during the Arizona State game:

“Let me be the first to congratulate you on an amazing first half. Arizona State made some mistakes in the first half and we did, but you’re leading an undefeated, 12th-ranked team in the nation at halftime. , 17-13.

“Some people say the Sun Devils have more talent on their team than we do, but we’re leading 17-13 at halftime.

“Others say the Sun Devils have an undefeated record and our record is 2-3, but we’re up 17-13 at the half.

“Some say the Sun Devils are ranked 12th in the country and since we’re not ranked in the top 25, they’re going to win this game, but we’re up 17-13 at the half.”

Now we will quickly give everyone a paper and a pen and by secret vote I want you to write down which player you think is the leader of this team.

After the ballots are immediately collected and Jake Locker’s name is on every ballot, or almost every ballot, I say this:

“Jake, you may be a redshirt freshman, but your teammates believe you are the leader of the Washington Huskies football team.

“I want you, Jake, to stand up right now and tell your coaching staff and your teammates why we can win this game in the second half, how we’re going to do it and what it’s going to take.”

As a head coach, I would sit back and listen. After Jake has done whatever he says, I ask every other player voted as a team leader to stand up and do the same.

Let the players convince themselves and believe that they can do in the second half what they did in the first half: dominate the opponent. Do that and Washington will upset its opponent.

Now, why is Washington the most statistically surprising team in the country?

1) The Huskies are ranked No. 41 in Sagarin’s rankings.

2) Their current record is 2-4.

3) They’re ranked No. 1 to play — for the 4th straight week — the toughest schedule among all 242 Division IA and 1-AA teams.

4) Among Sagarin’s first 40 teams, there is no team with less than 4 goals.

5) Sagarin’s next highest rated team with only 2 wins is #60 North Carolina at 2-5.

6) The Huskies, ranked as Sagarin’s 41st-best team in the country, ahead of No. 42 Alabama (5-2), No. 44 Wisconsin (5-2 and ranked No. 5 in the AP poll just two weeks ago), No. 46 Louisville ( 4-3), No. 48 Texas A&M (5-2), No. 51 Air Force (5-2) and No. 52 Indiana (5-2). Not so shabby, as the former Opera Man (Adam Sandler) says on Saturday Night Live.

7) The highest ranked team with the same 2-4 record is Washington Stanford at No. 68. Stanford played the No. 4 seed in the country.

8) North Carolina, with a 2-5 record, is ranked No. 60. The Tar Heels played the No. 3 schedule through Week 7 of college football.

I know, now you’re wondering who played the 2nd hardest table. It’s 1-6 Notre Dame. I expect the Huskies to lose against Oregon (hopefully not by 53-7 like cross-state rival Washington State) and California. I predicted this two weeks ago on October 3rd.

I also predicted on October 3 that Washington would beat (in order) Arizona, Stanford, Oregon, Washington State and Hawaii to finish the year 7-6. Hang in there, Husky fans, the best is yet to come.
