The Origins of American Football

I like football. Every year I look forward to the fall season, not only because of the cooler weather and the changing color of the leaves, but also because it means the start of football season. The anticipation inside me as I watch my team take the field again and make a run for first place in their division.

I have been a fan of this game and this team for decades. I have watched players, teams and even the football industry evolve and change over time. American football remains one of the most exciting and beautiful games in all of professional sports. With all its charm, how and where did American football originate? All sports have their beginnings and what I learned made me appreciate the game even more.

In the early 1800s, the popular game known as rugby, in which a football is kicked towards a goal and passed over a line, began at England’s famous boys’ rugby school. Around the same time, a game called “balloon”, similar to rugby, was played in America by a group of students from Princeton. East Coast prep schools such as Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Rutgers College also competed in football-type games. At the time, these early games resembled the traditional style of “mob football” in England. The rules were simple, with multiple players trying to advance the ball into the goal area, usually by any means necessary. By 1855, inflatable balls were used as football became a kick and run game.

Because there weren’t many established rules, violence and injuries were common due to the rough nature of the game. The game’s growing brutality caused so many injuries and deaths that it caused public concern that some universities banned it. President Theodore Roosevelt even threatened to ban the game and called on Harvard, Princeton, and Yale to help change or lose the sport. Eventually, the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed by representatives from Harvard, Columbia, and Princeton to establish a new code of rules based largely on rugby games.

The man responsible for shaping American football as we know it today was Walter Camp. He enrolled at Yale in 1876 and chaired the IFA’s rules committee. He proposed to reduce the number of players from 15 to 11. He helped set up the line of scrimmage and transition from center to quarterback. Camp also proposed requiring teams to advance the ball at least five yards on three downs. More changes were made such as reducing the size of the playing field, scoring rules and playing time. By 1887, a paid referee and referee were assigned to each match and wrestling was permitted. In 1889, officials were given whistles and stopwatches. The forward pass, one of the most important changes in the game, was not legalized until 1906.

Although the rules were changing, football continued to be violent in the style of the old mob games. Changes had to be made to make the game safer. These changes were discussed on December 28, 1905 by sixty-two schools that met in New York. As a result, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) was created. More than a century later, college football continues to grow as one of the most popular college sports. After the demise of the IFA, in 1920 the Professional Football Association of America was founded. The association was later reorganized and renamed the National Football League in 1922.
