Fight Racism Unitedly, No Knee-Jerk Kockish Controversy Please!
It is very unfortunate that the revival of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 has to affect an unnecessary controversy. Has any team protested their National Anthem in an international competition, or has any team protested their opponents for singing their national anthems? Definitely not, it is a festive tradition in almost all such competitions in various sports. Therefore, the “personal choice” syndrome will never appear here. So why does this syndrome have to kneel down with a great job? During our school days, our teachers ordered us to bend our knees on countless occasions, to correct our mistakes, that’s why we are better people today. Did we even think about exercising our democratic choice in those cases? The Black Lives Matter Movement (BLM), founded in 2013 as a decentralized political and social movement protesting police brutality and all racially motivated violence against black people, is well-grounded worldwide. The movement has had its ups and downs, but after the brutal police killing of black protester George Floyd in the US in 2020, it gained international prominence and Michael Holding, the former West Indies cricketer, made great efforts to bring it into the fold. arena cricket-unfortunately, this gentleman’s game in international cricket has seen vile racist remarks not only involving blacks, but also so-called ‘coloured’ players.
We have seen teams kneel before kick-off in most of the matches played so far in this World Cup to show their solidarity against the evil of racism. The ICC has not issued any official guidelines for the gesture, but has made it optional for teams. Cricket South Africa (CSA), a country boycotted by the international community for years of its infamous apartheid policy, has set an example by making the gesture mandatory for its team before kick-off. So what’s wrong with following this noble initiative, and how does personal choice come into play in such matters of international importance? The Indian team also adopted this gesture as per the instructions of their cricket board and England also gave this gesture in their match against West Indies like most other teams.
This brilliant move also happened during South Africa’s opening match against Australia; Of course, it does not involve all players. But suddenly and more importantly, when the match was against the West Indies, South Africa’s key opener and wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock raised the issue, citing his refusal to bend the knee for personal reasons. Not only did he refuse the gesture, he pulled out of the game in the final minutes, which was confirmed by the CSA. This is extremely worrying as de Kock has been a key cricketer in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for years, playing for the Mumbai Indians (the franchise may soon release him due to influence), which has many black and ‘coloured’ players; in fact, India is a country of only colored people. So why did de Kock never object to playing with them, as an integral part of the team? If his “personal choice” is not to support the BLM movement, it smacks of racism, or else de Kock may be a staunch supporter of the theory of “white supremacy” so outrageously promoted by former US President Donald Trump. We condemn his actions in the World Cup which may ultimately affect his entire cricket career and South Africa will certainly never want to lose such a key player. The CSA is yet to make a final ruling on Quinton de Kock’s future, although some in the media say the player has ruled out the entire tournament, while others fear this could be the last we see of de Kock on the pitch.
We hope that there will be appropriate punishment for all stakeholders who have good intentions, respect for the ideals and movement of Nelson Mandela, and for anyone who is guilty of racism. The ICC should, indeed, take this opportunity to make the ‘kneeling’ gesture mandatory for all participating teams. The Council justly prohibits all political and religious activities, but there can be no hesitation in defending this noble cause and the principles of democratic choice.
South Africa won easily without de Kock in a match against West Indies that was marred by controversy. In other matches, Afghanistan scored a huge win over Group B winners Scotland in Group-2, which was even bigger than Pakistan’s win over India. Pakistan continued their thrilling run of victories by defeating New Zealand, although they had to struggle to reach a paltry target of 135 runs. England in Group-1 also continued their terrible bulldozing action against Bangladesh. Both Pakistan and England seem to be enjoying their luck with the behavior of the slow pitches and the late dew factor for bowling. After making history by entering the Super-12 stage for the first time, Namibia beat well-placed Ireland with relative comfort in their opening World Cup match in Group-2.
