Premier League Preview – Newcastle Vs Stoke

Newcastle United host Stoke City at St James’ Park on Sunday in what will be their sixth game of the Premier League campaign.

Ahead of the game, Newcastle had enough of a Carling Cup win in midweek thanks to a 4-3 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. It is strange that “Newcastle” also lost at home to Blackpool in the Premier League.

Chris Hughton’s side have scored eleven goals in their first five games of the Premier League season. Their defense stood up in the count and conceded just four goals, giving the Magpies a healthy goal difference.

Compare that to Stoke’s six goals and eight against themselves. Seven of them entered the field in the first 45 minutes of the game in which they played.

The Potters have been up and down this season. After a recent away win against Villa, they drew at home to West Ham.

James Perch returns to Newcastle from suspension. Sol Campbell, who played the entire Carling Cup era, is also likely to start. Goalkeeper Steve Harper has been advised to be out for 12 weeks after undergoing shoulder surgery. Tim Krul is likely to replace him.

Danny Simpson and Danny Guthrie have returned to fitness from shoulder and knee injuries. Newcastle will also be without Steven Taylor, who is nursing a shoulder injury, and Dan Gosling, who has a knee concern.

For Stoke, the regulars are due to return after being rested for the Carling Cup tie at Fulham in midweek, with goalkeeper James Sorensen among them. Abdoulaye Fay will bolster the back line, while the forward line should benefit from the return of John Walters.

Manager Tony Pulis also has winger Jermaine Pennant back from a foot injury.

The Potters last won at St James’ in 1976. Their last win against the Magpies came in 1989 when they dominated the Division 2 match 2-1. The sides have drawn three of their last four league and cup matches.

Carroll is Newcastle’s man of the season with four goals in five games, while Jones has scored just one goal in his five games against the Potters.

Stoke will have to consider themselves lucky if they come away with a draw; Newcastle will have to consider it a missed opportunity if they don’t get the three points from the game.

Newcastle are likely to field these players in their starting XI: Krul, Enrique, Williamson, Coloccini, Perch, Ben Arfa, Nolan, Barton, Routledge, Ameobi, Carroll.

Stoke City’s likely starting XI will be: Sorensen, Collins, Faye, Shawcross, Huth, Etherington, Delap, Whitehead, Whelan Jones, Walters.
