For most of us from public schools, PE (physical education) was part of the school curriculum. Therefore, we had no choice but to follow it and treat it as one of the school subjects. For an outdoor beginner, PE classes were great because it allowed a lot of youthful hormones to kick in. For those of us who dread PE (myself included), our main thoughts were more like “what good is PE when it doesn’t improve our test scores”. We were very wrong then.

Only now, as we approach middle age, do we realize the mistake we made in our youth for not building a stronger body to handle the stresses and strains of modern life. However, it is not too late. It is not the end of my life. I can still make a difference.

Hasn’t someone ever said that the glory of this temple will be more glorious in our future days than in the past. So, I write about fitness to take my middle-aged body to greater heights.

The best way to health is light to moderate physical activity. This is perfect for me as we are very busy and time is a precious commodity in today’s economy. The least amount of time spent on physically torturous exercises and yet being able to maintain a healthy body would be just right for me.

All I want to achieve is a healthy body. I am not a fitness guru or exercise freak (sorry for the term used). I enjoy being a little lazy for once.

I like to pamper myself with some pleasures, like good food and sitting in front of the TV. But I realized that it can’t be normal or I’ll dig my own grave later.

Do you want to be healthy or do you want to be healthy? Hey, I thought it meant the same thing.

Well, fitness is defined in relation to a concept called physical work capacity, or how much work the body can do. A person’s fitness can be determined in the laboratory by seeing how much energy they generate on a bicycle ergometer while cycling at a certain heart rate, or on a track by seeing how far they can run in a given time. Fitness can also be understood in relation to a number of components including endurance, flexibility, strength and power. You must be fit to practice many sports, including football, hockey and tennis.

On the other hand, good health is a broader concept that includes being free from disease and illness and being in a proper state of mental and emotional health.

Usually, being healthy and being healthy are related. But this is not always the case. For example, you can be very fit by playing tennis but have a serious health problem like alcoholism.

When we understand these two concepts and the difference between fitness and good health, then you will realize that you actually need less exercise to be healthy. You really need more exercise to get fit and fit.

How to qualify?

Many people need to be fit because their job or career requires it. If you are an athlete or athlete, you need to be prepared or you will be out of the game. If you are a soldier or a firefighter, you need to be fit because it can mean a life or death decision for you just when you need it most.

In order to be fit, you must follow a set program of exercises, which we call training. Examples of such fitness training include gymnastics, jogging, weight lifting, swimming programs, etc.

This means that if you want to be very, very fit, you need to exercise at a moderate or high intensity level. Usually, when one achieves such levels of fitness, one definitely becomes healthier. However, if you don’t want to be healthy, you don’t need to exercise.

How to be healthy?

On the other hand, if all you want is to be healthy, then you only need a lighter level of exercise to be and stay healthy. Sometimes fear and anxiety about heart disease, high blood cholesterol, obesity, or mental health problems motivate us to be physically active.

You don’t need to train at the same intensity to stay fit as you do to stay healthy. You can incorporate exercise into your regular routine. Instead of getting in your little car and driving around the block, plan to park a block away and walk the whole way. Walk the golf course and carry your own bag instead of pulling a golf cart or caddy. Do some simple exercises using isometric exercises behind your desk when no one is looking. Do some pushups or sit-ups between TV commercials.

All I’m saying is that you don’t have to torture yourself to stay healthy.

Some active lifestyle tips:

* Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator.

* Do not use the remote control to change TV channels. Get up from your chair.

* Bring your running shoes if you can find one when you travel to the outstation

To stay healthy, some experts recommend being physically active at least five days out of seven.

We increasingly live in a world where we need less and less physical activity in our lives. We have household appliances for us to wash and dry, cars to transport us, and desks to sit at to work or study.

At school we are always told to “sit down”.

Considering this technological “evil” that keeps us from moving, any physical activity is a health benefit.

Not everyone can subscribe to the magic formula for the amount of exercise to get the benefits.

The key is to put in the effort and persevere. As soon as you move, you win!
