The Dish: Former Dallas Cowboys Fan Tells All

I was a Dallas Cowboys fan.

I really did: I was born in New England and became aware of the NFL in the mid-1970s. The six-year-old version of me joined the American team. Maybe it was a bright star. Maybe it was the beautiful cheerleaders. I was a fan of Roger Stubach. I was shocked when Jackie Smith threw a TD pass in the Super Bowl. I cried about Danny White’s worthlessness. I hate The Catch. I cheered for Jimmy Johnson’s revival and actually lived in Texas for three-Super-Bowl-in-four years. I suffered in the late 90s.

But I don’t really root for Dallas anymore. Part of it is that the column; it becomes more and more difficult to choose sides. But part of it is the team’s 2006 release. It is officially unbearable.

I love Bill Parcells. Obviously, I didn’t like him that much when he was the coach of the Giants, but I respected him. I loved this guy when he coached the Patriots, my favorite AFC team. And when Dallas announced they were hiring him, I thought: finally. But Parcells is sad. At every press conference and on the sidelines of every game, you can see his career pass before his eyes. He’s fed up with this bunch of misfits, and who can blame him?

I’ve devoted enough pixel dust to Terrell Owens in this space. He is the poster child for what is wrong with American pro sports. But there’s another idiot shot, Mike “Earring” Vanderjagt. There’s Drew Bledsoe, who seems like a classy guy, but the quarterback is painful to watch. There’s the owner, whose liposuctioned face looks like a crypt keeper and who insists on playing general manager despite an undisputed record of absolute failure at the position. Heck, on this team, quarterback Terry Glenn looks like a good guy. They seem to be good around the defense (they aren’t) and argue on the sidelines like a COPS replay.

This is an insufferable group of people to root out. They dominate the headlines with nonsensical issues (most of which, I agree, revolve around Owens, aka, the baddest guy in the world). They behave like fools when they win and they behave like fools when they lose. The milk is boiled. The pudding is spoiled.

And here’s something I never thought I’d say: I don’t like the Cowboys anymore.

How was the World Series betting? Was it mostly Tigers before the Series started? Has that changed as we’ve progressed and the Cardinals have made it clear they’re not to be taken lightly?

BoDog Bookmakers, BoDog.ws: The Tigers weren’t as favored as people thought heading into the postseason. With a first-round game against the Yankees, Detroit didn’t get much respect, and the more they won, the more people thought the Yankees were a sure bet. They then faced a very solid Auckland side where the action was mixed from both sides depending on who took the mound. After a search there, bookies took notice of Detroit’s talented lineup. In Game 1 of the World Series, we saw most of the money go to Detroit, who at that point had won seven postseason games. But the Cardinals made a statement with a 7-2 victory. In the last two games saw two aces step up: Rogers in game 2 and Carpenter in game 3. In practice, in these cases, the pitchers of the star came a little heavier. The Cards look very comfortable in the postseason, and they’ve had plenty of practice over the past few years. It’s pretty clear that at 2-1 they’re in the running to do it at home.

What a crazy and jam-packed Week 7 in the NFL: by my count, eight ‘Dogs won straight. Obviously it’s not unprecedented, but I guess this week was pretty good for the books? Want to tell us which games were the most popular for the wagering public?

BDB, BoDog.ws: It’s been a good week for the books with some big upsets. Tampa Bay’s miracle win over Philadelphia, Oakland over an Arizona team that challenged the Bears, and Kansas City not falling at home to San Diego were the three biggest shocks to the betting public.

The NBA opens on October 31st (how scary!). Right here, right now: give us your NBA finalists and tell us why.

BDB, BoDog.ws: Cleveland and Phoenix. Cleveland, because the NBA needs it; LeBron showed last year that the team has playoff potential. If he takes the team to the Finals now, the NBA can use this story to take the league back to Jordan’s glory days. Phoenix because San Antonio is so boring, and if Detroit takes it in the East, at least we won’t have to host the NBA Finals again.

What do you think of the NFL’s decision to host two regular season games a year on international soil? Do you think this will have a negative impact on the participating teams? Do you think it will do anything to betting in particular?

BDB, BoDog.ws: It seems surprising that the NFL is going away for two regular season games. The preseason is understandable, but it can definitely add some extra fatigue to the participating teams. Flying to Japan in the middle of the week and returning to the US on Monday morning to prepare for the following week is definitely not going to be as easy as a two to three hour interstate flight. This shouldn’t affect betting too much, as long as the games have the same TV coverage. Hey, who are we to doubt one of the most successful leagues in the world?
