Troubleshooting Your Dish Network Receiver
It happened to all of us. It’s fourth-and-ten with just 1:42 to go in the second half — and of course your team is down. The weather outside is getting worse day by day. Suddenly, the picture on your TV looks eerily like snow falling through your window. It’s a race against the game clock to get the picture back on your TV before you give up and just look for the score on the evening news.
Keep in mind that only in rare cases will you lose a picture with Dish Network – when you do, there’s usually nothing wrong with your equipment or service. This article discusses some of the easiest and fastest ways to troubleshoot Dish Network receiver problems. From high in the sky to a dish network receiver
Dish Network uploads programming to its satellites via massive ground transmission stations. The digital image travels up through the atmosphere, where it finds satellites orbiting Earth miles above the United States. Those satellites record and retransmit the digital signal in such a way that almost anyone with a clear view of the sky can receive it. The signal is collected by ubiquitous mini-dishes and sent through cables to a Dish Network receiver, which is installed to decode and convert the digital signal into a visible image. That vivid image will be transferred to your new 56 inch plasma TV where just moments ago you were watching the second half of your favorite team’s football game.Game plan
If you suddenly lose the picture on your TV, the problem can be in one of six places – but before you panic, I’ll tell you that you should try only four of them.
- Plate – If something interferes with the signal coming from the satellite to your dish, the picture will definitely suffer. If the signal is completely blocked, your image will disappear. Make sure there is nothing between your plate and where your plate is pointed in the sky. This could include: a tree branch, your motor home, your neighbor’s motor home, snow accumulation, ice or excess water in the pan, or anything else you can possibly imagine. Fortunately, the solution is simple. By removing the obstruction, let the signal flow freely to your Network receiver. Of course, if the obstacle is your neighbor’s prize oak tree, be smart when considering ways to overcome it (ie talk to him about it and figure out a solution together). If it’s ice or snow, just clear the plate and you’ll be back in the game before they hit the ball.
- Cables and Connections – The wiring and connectors that carry the signal from the dish to your Network receiver may be part of the problem. It is likely that the picture will suddenly cut you, especially in the fourth trimester, if the wiring is bad. The easiest way to check this is to ensure that the integrity of the wiring is still intact and that all connections are tight. If you still don’t get a picture on your TV, try connecting the cables to another TV or routing the picture through your VCR. If you don’t have a football game yet, try using different cables. If the image comes back at any time while doing this, you’ve pinpointed where the problem is and you can fix it…after playing, of course.
- Your Dish Network Receiver – In very rare cases, your receiver may stop receiving or decoding the signal. To fix this, simply unplug the receiver for 30 seconds and then plug it back in. (Don’t worry – 1:42 at the end of a football game can last anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes.) You can also try removing the programming card from the receiver and then reinserting it. Both of these steps will help reset the receiver and when you turn it back on, it should work properly again.
- Your new plasma TV – I’m no expert in troubleshooting TVs that cost more than my car, but checking cables and connections is never a bad thing. A word of advice from someone who’s been there and done that – make sure the back of your big, heavy TV is easily accessible. The only thing that makes you angry about missing your favorite team’s miraculous comeback in that game you missed is throwing that giant TV on your fingers when you break your back, kicking it off the wall.
The good news is that your team came from behind and won. The better news is that you read this article and were able to watch it live. The best news is that you kept your cool, and since your wife was so impressed by your behavior, she bought you a pool table.
