Top 25 Poll – Week 11 – No 1 – The Auburn Tigers, Until They Lose

The AP Top 25 and Coaches Top 25 College Football polls are nationally recognized, but after 50+ years of watching and/or covering college football games and being a former sports editor for a daily newspaper, here’s a different perspective:

No. 1 is now clearly Auburn, and here’s why:

1) Auburn (11-0) – Georgia 3 touchdowns quickly, but still with a lead of 18 points, 49-31. Only one trip to Alabama stands between the Tigers and a perfect regular season record. Despite all the bad press last week for Auburn and its Heisman candidate Cam Newton, they responded well to the pressure. There are currently no poisons in his hometown of Auburn. Only 1 AP Top 25 team has beaten a 4 ranked opponent and that is Auburn. Among the 25 teams, only 8 other teams have even defeated 2 opponents. Stop talking about Boise State and TCU beating every No. 1 ranked opponent all year — talk about the lack of competition.

2) Oregon (10-0) – The high-powered Duck offense (leading the nation in scoring offense and total offense) suddenly looks like they can get beat and easily escape California with a 15-13 victory that they could easily lose. There are still games against Arizona and at Oregon State. Oregon defeated 2 ranked teams – Stanford and Southern California.

3) LSU (9-1) – No-nonsense team, whipped at Louisiana State Monroe, 51-zip. Feeling their oats. It beat 2 in-state opponents – Mississippi State and Alabama – and only lost to Auburn. Next host Mississippi.

4) Wisconsin (9-1) – beat Indiana 83-20, Badgers best offensive game in 95 years! Has beaten two top 25 teams, Ohio State and Iowa. Now touring the Michigan Big House and having a show with Denard Robinson.

5) Boise State (9-0) – Beaten around a lame Idaho team, 52-14. Next up is Fresno State; The Bulldogs should be a little tougher than the Idaho Vandals. Only 1 ranked team has beaten Virginia Tech. Only here because they are 1 of 4 unbeaten teams left.

6) TCU (11-0) – The Horned Frogs, who led the nation in scoring defense and total defense, gave up 35 points and 300 yards to Diego State before winning 5, 40-35. Utah’s only 1-ranked team to lose to Notre Dame this week was a 28-3 loss. It plays 173rd-ranked New Mexico in its last game, which is ridiculous for such a tough competition. Only here as they remain 1 of 4 unbeaten teams, not surprising given the level of their competition.

7) Michigan State (9-1) – Was idle this week. They have as many wins as every team below them, but have only beaten one ranked Wisconsin team, a very good team that is also 9-1. Host Purdue is ranked 93rd and not exactly a powerhouse at 4-6.

8) Stanford (9-1) – Not impressive in 17-13 win against Arizona State. Defeated 2 ranked opponents – Southern California and Arizona. Now has to travel to California, where the Bears lost to No. 1 Oregon, 15-13. The Cardinal better get ready or they’re going to get beat for the second time this year. Big win over California gives Stanford extra power.

9) Nebraska (9-1) – The offensive Cornhuskers held Kansas to 87 yards, 5 first downs and 6 sacks in a 20-3 win. It’s a good thing Nebraska has a repeatable offense and repeatable defense. Defeated two ranked teams – Oklahoma and Missouri. Visits Texas A&M this week.

10) Alabama (8-2) – beat No. 17 Mississippi State 30-10. Won over two ranked teams – Arkansas and Mississippi State. Hanging in there despite losses to South Carolina and LSU. Georgia State AA game next, an absolute joke. The Crimson Tide had better keep Georgia State here.

11) Arkansas (8-2) – Just beat UTEP 58-21. Defeated 2 ranked teams – Texas A&M and South Carolina. Only lost to Auburn and Alabama. Next, he will travel to the state of Mississippi.

12) Oklahoma State (9-1) – Outshot Texas, 33-16, but the Longhorns are weak this year. The win wasn’t that big, but no other team is doing as well. Defeated Team 1 – Texas A&M. Next travels to Kansas. Should score more against the Nebraska Jayhawks.

13) Southern California (7-3) – Defeated No. 18 Arizona 24-21. The Trojans are feeling their mojo. Arizona was Cal’s first win over a ranked team. Will travel to Oregon State next and must win to stay here.

14) South Carolina (7-3) – Defeated No. 24 Florida 36-14 to clinch the SEC East Division title and snap a 12-game losing streak to Florida. Never underestimate Steve Spurrier on the road in the Swamp. When he coached the Florida Gators, his record was 122-27-1 with 9 straight SEC East Division titles and the 1996 National Championship.

15) Ohio State (9-1) – beat Penn State 38-14. Defeated 1st team, Miami, Florida. Next up is a trip to Iowa, and it’s best to stay here and have a big winner. The Buckeyes aren’t that big, but neither are the teams below.

16) Texas A&M (7-3) – beat Baylor 42-30. Defeated No. 1 ranked opponent, Oklahoma. Nebraska hosts next in what should be a good opportunity for the Aggies or the Cornhuskers.

17) Virginia Tech (8-2) – beat North Carolina, 26-10. Has not beaten any ranked opponent this season. Next travels to Miami (not Ohio, but Florida). There should be no reason to win to stay here.

18) Oklahoma (8-2) – beat Texas Tech, 45-7, but has yet to beat a ranked team this year. The future holds the Baylor Bears.

19) Nevada (9-1) – Almost upset and choked against Fresno State, eventually winning 35-34. The ranked team has not defeated. Only here because the Wolf Pack has 9 wins against a bad defense.

20) Missouri (8-2) – Slide by Kansas State 38-28. Defeated 2 ranked teams – Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Will travel to Iowa State next and should have a field day with an easy win.

(Ed’s note: I’m just tired of Iowa, Utah, Arizona, Mississippi State, and Central Florida, all of whom lost again this week, so I’m dropping them and going for new blood. My new picks might not be that much better. , but they can use recognition.)

21) San Diego State (7-3) – woke up 11-win TCU with 35 points on the best defense goals in the nation, and only lost to the Horned Frogs 5. Host Utah next. Good luck to the Utes, maybe they really need it.

22) Northwestern (7-3) – Defeated No. 13 Iowa 21-17. The Wildcats have the 11th-ranked passer in Dan Persa and the 18th-best defender. Now Northwestern has beaten a ranked team, something Virginia Tech, Oklahoma and Nevada can’t say. Host Illinois next, a real test against a strong team.

23) Northern Illinois (8-2) – Doesn’t have really good wins against tough teams, but has 8 wins, same as Nevada. Travel to Ball State next, and should win.

24) Temple (8-2) – No real big wins, but has 8 wins. Ohio hosts next.

25) Notre Dame (5-5) – Hey, don’t give up. Just beat the snot of Utah 28-3. Did college football do itself a huge favor by exposing a team that was undefeated two weeks ago and went 8-0. The Utes first lost to TCU 47-7 and are now coming off a 28-3 loss to Notre Dame. TCU was the first real Utah team to play all year – Notre Dame was apparently second. Notre Dame has a chance to be bowled this week when it hosts the Fighting Irish.

Key games this coming week include only 3 games against ranked teams – Ohio State at Iowa State, Arkansas at Mississippi State and Nebraska at Texas A&M. Other exciting games include Utah at San Diego State, Wisconsin at Michigan and Fresno State at Boise. Watch college football on Saturday, it sure beats raking leaves or shoveling snow.
