Effective Self-Leadership – Success and Victory Are Only a Half Step Away

An old story about two men walking in the forest. They stumble upon a large grizzly bear and her cub. The story goes like this.

Ray tells Bob, “That bear sure is angry.”

“Yes,” Bob replies.

“That bear sure looks fast,” says Ray.

“Yes,” is Bob’s reply again.

“We’re running better,” says Ray.

“Yeah, on the count of three,” Bob says, laughing.

“Bob, what are you laughing at, we’re going to die!”

Bob replies, “I’m laughing because I have a secret.”

As they run, Ray turns around and asks, “What’s Bob’s secret?”

Bob smiles and says, “I don’t have to be faster than the bear; I have to be faster than you!”

Bob’s secret was that you have to know what your goals are, know who your real competition is, and do what it takes to stay “Half Stepped”.

Bob learned the secret of Morgan’s “Half Step Concept”.

Consider this, the difference between a gold medal and last place is usually measured in microseconds. In the 100m race, all sprinters gather at the finish line. The race is so close that high-speed photography is used to determine the winner. In a gold medal race, half a step can be the difference between winning and last place.

At the 2006 Torino Winter Games, the skier tipped the men’s 4X10km cross-country ski relay. After four years of training, the 40-kilometer course, twelve athletes in three different teams of four, who all performed at the highest level, decided victory by less than a half step.

Microseconds or micro-actions can make the difference between success and failure in the Olympics or in life. In fact, the secret to winning in most activities in life is to stay one “Half Step” ahead of your competition.

The same principle applies in business and life.

Consider a game in the National Football League. The difference between a receiver catching a snap and the ball being intercepted by a defensive player is usually a half step.

11 football players perform different tasks, i.e. blocking, running and tricking. All with the common goal of getting the receiver one step ahead of the defender. Linemen, who may be physically away from the play, know that their receiver needs “a step,” so they hold their blocks a little longer.

The quarterback fakes and hands off the ball to the defender to trick the defense into believing the defender is running the ball. The player is completely cheated. Meanwhile, the receiver executes his passing route with discipline and precision. The quarterback knows exactly where the receiver will be at a given time. The offense is all on the same page. They know when and where the quarterback will throw the football. The precision and coordination of all this activity is designed to give the receiver a “one step” advantage over the defender.

The receiver relies on the performance of his teammates to gain a “one-step” advantage on the defender. All of this teamwork is required to give the receiver the “half step” advantage he requires for success.

The team knows that one step taken can be the difference between scoring (six points) and losing possession (zero points).

The concept is also true for the defensive team. Defensive players understand the “half step concept”. Defensive players are all looking for ways to give their teammates a half-step advantage over the offense. If they can disrupt the offensive players, they can be the difference in the outcome of the game.

The defense understands that if the quarterback’s pass is intercepted and returned by a defensive player for a touchdown (six points), it is one point out of twelve (12) points. Not only did the attackers fail to reach their goal (six points), but the defenders scored six points. These scores, perhaps due to the difference of half a step, could determine the outcome of the game.

What does this have to do with your business?

Like a football team, your organization has many parts and many people working together to achieve goals and achieve organizational goals. You have a lot of people who all do different and different tasks, but rely on each other to achieve goals. Every individual, no matter how far “out of the game” they are, must realize that they must contribute if the “half-step” advantage is to be gained.

Your business is a team, and everyone from the top to the lowest employee needs to understand the goal. Whether the goal is to sell used cars or make widgets, everyone needs to understand that getting a “one step” on your competition has to be done. This requires EVERYONE in the organization to develop and possess the attitudes, skills and knowledge to be the best. They must perform the difficult tasks required to achieve the goals, regardless of setbacks or problems, but most importantly, stay one and a half steps ahead of your competition.

Extreme position? An exaggeration? Are we being too hard on you?

Well, what do you think about the half step now? Is it a bigger, often elusive, and more important advantage than you thought? Think about it…How many times have you missed opportunities or been defeated by adversity? Maybe you’ve done everything you could have hoped for, but you’re still half a step away from reaching your goals.

Worse… you may not know what happened and why you came in second place. You lost because you didn’t understand the essence of the competition, you didn’t pay attention to the details, and you didn’t know about the “half step concept”.
