#22 Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview

Spring practices are in the books and fall camps will be here before you know it, so that means an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August, and Matt Fargo is here to help you figure out what to expect next year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 college football preview.

#22 – Nebraska Cornhuskers 8-4 SU; 6-5 ATS

Taking Fargo This will be the third year of Bill Callahan’s West Coast law enforcement effort, and it will be an important experience. The Huskers finished a disappointing 96th last year after finishing 69th last year. Offenses are expected to improve in the second year of the new system and not fall back, so a big improvement is needed or Callahan could be out sooner than expected. It is said that it takes three years for crime to click on the west coast to run out. Nebraska has gone to one bowl in the last two of the three years, both of which were the Alamo Bowl, so Callahan should get the Huskers back to a bowl game. He has a solid defense to work with, and if the offense improves as it should, Nebraska could return to the glory days. Playing in the Big XII championship is a goal that cannot be taken away.

Returning starters on offense – 7 offensive lineman Zach Taylor came into his own last season and threw for a school-record 2,653 yards while throwing for 19 touchdowns. The offense obviously relies on him and he has no problem carrying it out. Trouble lies ahead as Nebraska has just one starter returning on an offensive line that allowed 38 sacks last season. Perhaps even worse, the running game will have to replace Corey Ross with a back who has little to no experience. The Huskers are ranked 107th in the nation in rushing attack, and for the West Coast offense to thrive, the running game needs to be established. Sophomores Marlon Lackey and Cody Glenn should step up immediately. Taylor has five of the top six passing yards, but catching the ball all starts up front.

Returning starters on defense – 7 The Blackshirts improved from 56th overall in 2004 to 26th last season, and that ranking could improve even further. The defense ranks third in the Big XII behind Texas and Oklahoma and has arguably the best front seven in the conference. The Lions are the best unit in the conference, led by Corey McKeon. With Rudd, Steve Octavian and Stuart Bradley all back from injury, this unit will compete with Penn St. as one of the best in the country. The defensive line is led by ends Adam Carriker and Jay Moore and has a total of six players named to the all-conference watch list, which is impressive considering some aren’t even starters. The secondary question, that of safety, is the biggest one since both starters need to be replaced. Black shirts are back.

Nebraska’s schedule is fortunate to play in the Big XII North, the weaker of the two divisions. Because of this, the Huskers only have to face three teams from the South, and this season, two of the three teams that are off the slate are Oklahoma and Texas Tech. They lost two of their four last year to Nebraska. Another bonus is that Texas has to come to Memorial Stadium. Four of the first five games this season are at home, but this one is a road game at USC Bears. Nebraska has a 6-1 lead going into that game against the Longhorns, with a game at Iowa St. the only other hurdle. After Texas, three of the final four games are wins, and the game at Texas A&M is the only question. Nebraska does not have a bye week until its final game of the season against Colorado.

You can talk about … The Huskers’ success, and if they can surpass their eight-game winning streak, will depend on the offense. The offensive line is a big question mark, but at least the first part of the schedule is easy, sans USC, which could give the unit time to come together. Defense will be the Huskers early. Nebraska is just 3-6 ATS as a road watcher since 2002, and it will certainly score in Pasadena. To make matters worse, they are coming off a win over Troy, and they have won just 10 of their last 26 straight games. Beating USC isn’t as impossible as it used to be, but it will take a lot of effort to beat the Trojans, who have won 27 times at home.
