#76 Washington Huskies Preview
Spring practices are in the books and fall camps will be here before you know it, so that means an early jump on the 2006 NCAA football season. Knowing the teams now will save you time in August, and Matt Fargo is here to help you figure out what to expect next year. We go from worst to first in this 2006 college football preview.
#76 – Washington Huskies 2-9 SU; 4-7 ATS
Fargo’s once-proud “Take The Huskies” football program remains in shambles. Washington, after finishing 10-1 in 2000, dropped its win total by two wins in 2004 over the next four years before being shut out last season. Head coach Ty Willingham will be in his second season with the Huskies, but skeptics are wondering if he really is the right man for the job. He has the talent to succeed offensively, but that depends on working as a team, something that didn’t happen last season in an inconsistent offense. On the other hand, there was no improvement in the defense, which allowed 30.6 ppg, a slight increase from 2004. If there was anything good about last season, it was the fact that the Huskies were much more competitive than the year before. . four of their losses were by eight points or less. Those close games must be won or Washington could be in for another long and frustrating season.
Returning starters on offense – 6 The offense increased its scoring output by more than a notch last season, but still ranked 90th in the nation in scoring offense. Washington scored more than 24 points just twice all season, and those were their only two wins of the year. Quarterback Isaiah Stanback is arguably one of the biggest underdogs in the entire country. He is skilled and very athletic, but is unable to move the offense, and his big-play ability is precisely that ability. He looked great moving the offense in the spring, but the jury is still out on whether he can get the job done. Running back Kenny James is back after being injured most of last season and the receivers look strong once again. The problem is on the offensive line, where all but one starter must be replaced. If the rushing line comes together, the Huskies will have to improve on offense once again, but it will really fall on Stanback, who will have to prove that he is the right choice.
Returning starters on defense – 8 This is where the real problem happened last season. The Huskies were 94th in total defense and 89th in scoring defense, but the end of the season offered little hope for the Washington faithful. It allowed just 19.3 ppg in its final three games, and with eight returning starters, there could be some big improvements in 2006. The pass defense was unstoppable as it allowed 275.7 ypg, 106th in the nation. Four secondary bosses are back, which can be good or bad depending on how they progress. If the spring game is any indication, it appears to be the latter, as the unit has been burned for big games many times. The rushing defense posted its best numbers in three seasons, and the quarterback looks to be a defensive force once again. Washington lost its top two defenders and will be difficult to replace, but all indications are that the return of Trenton Tuiasosopo will have a bigger impact.
The Pac Ten schedule, with the exception of USC and Cal, looks pretty weak this season, but Washington is not the beneficiary of an easy conference schedule. The Huskies hit the road with four of the top five teams, including both the Trojans and Golden Bears, and five of nine Pac Ten games away from home. This includes the season finale in the Apple Cup against Washington St. With nine conference games, Washington has just three non-conference contests. After hosting San Jose St. in the opener, the Huskies will travel to Oklahoma before returning home to take on a tough Fresno St. team. The first game against the Spartans is the only sure win in an entire schedule filled with plenty of games. Washington didn’t win those games last year, but with another year of experience, they can bounce back.
You can talk about… After going 22-4 at home from 2000-2003, the Huskies went 2-11 in the last two seasons and they should return to that home stretch. The lone home win came against Idaho last season as they were outscored by 19.5 ppg in four conference home games. Over the past two years, Washington has averaged a combined 15.5 ppg in Pac Ten action. This has added to their futility in covering Pac Ten games as they are now 15-31-2 ATS over the past six seasons. They host UCLA in their conference opener, and while the Bruins won’t be as strong as last season, Washington isn’t in a position to win right now. The Huskies are just 2-9 ATS in their last 11 conference openers, and that includes a home loss to UCLA in 2004. A win over the Bruins could be a big boost for a program that needs some good stuff.
