How to Tell If You Are Really a Hard Gainer
The definition of a hard gainer is someone who has trouble gaining muscle mass. Unfortunately, since this definition is so open-ended, it’s hard to tell who properly fits the description and who is just trying to blame outside influences for their lack of progress.
Let’s face it: If you never exercise…you will have a hard time “gaining muscle mass”. So does this qualify you as a tough person? Not in my book, but I’ve seen a lot of people use the label gainer where it doesn’t belong.
So today, let’s clear everything up once and for all. In my book, a real gainer is someone who had a hard time gaining muscle mass due to their genetics. Not out of laziness or ignorance… but because his mom and dad didn’t give him good genes for building muscle.
How can you tell if a person has good muscle building genetics? After all, we cannot dissect and examine human DNA.
There is no way to know with 100% accuracy whether a person is a serious gainer or not. But fortunately, there are some indicators that we can use to determine if someone is really profitable or if they are just looking for an excuse to justify their progress.
Rule #1: If you’re a mesomorph…you’re not a serious gainer.
Three categories are used to classify body types. I use football analogies to make classification easier.
Ectomorphs are tall and skinny and often have trouble gaining muscle. Ectomorphs usually have long limbs and a fast metabolism. An ectomorph on the football field is probably a wide receiver. If you’re an ectomorph… there’s a very good chance you’re having trouble getting it.
Endomorphs tend to be the largest classifications. Endomorphs can be characterized by having a slow metabolism. Endomorphs usually have no trouble gaining muscle, but suffer from excess body fat and must always watch what they eat because they tend to gain fat quickly.
An endomorph would be a linebacker or offensive lineman on the football field. Some endomorphs also have ectomorph tendencies when it comes to building muscle and therefore could be considered hard gainers.
Mesomorphs are blessed with the perfect body type. They seem to easily gain muscle without worrying about fat gain. Mesomorphs are the type of guys who seem to work for hours every day, but shock everyone when they discover they’re actually doing nothing. A mesomorph on the football field is usually a well-built cornerback or strong safety. Mesomorphs are not hard gainers.
Rule #2: Got calves?
Calf size is a good indicator of whether or not you’re really struggling to gain muscle. In fact, the bigger your calves are before you start training, the easier it is to gain muscle.
So… if you have soft calves, there’s a good chance you’re having trouble gaining muscle. If you are blessed with large calves, you probably have the potential to gain muscle. Bottom Line: Calves are the equivalent of making a profit.
Rule #3: If you have small hands and small ankles, you’re probably a heavy gainer.
If your wrists are smaller than seven inches, it means that you have a smaller average bone structure, and as a result, this may indicate that you will have some difficulty gaining muscle mass.
If you have small breasts, you will probably have a hard time gaining muscle.
Rule #4: Do you often get sick after 3-4 weeks of weight training?
Skinny guys traditionally need more rest than average guys. While the average guy can train four or five times a week and still make gains, a serious gainer who follows a similar schedule will greatly exceed his recovery capacity and eventually tire himself out and get sick. .
If your strength slows down and you eventually stop within three to four weeks of starting a new program where you train more than three times a week, this may also indicate an average time to gain muscle.
Bottom line… And Hope for the Desperate
Some of the features of the hard gainer may appeal to you, while some may not. It’s not an exact science, but if you find that two or more of the points above apply to you, there’s a good chance you might be a hard gainer or have a tendency to be a hard gainer.
But there is hope for guys who find it difficult to gain muscle. Hard weight gainers can gain muscle mass. They just have to follow a different set of rules. Because if you are not blessed with genetics that allow you to easily gain muscle, you should follow a training program that is specially designed for guys without big genes.
