I Dated a Dallas Cowboy!

And it almost brought down the country club. We must not stop here. It was Las Colinas in Irving, Texas, and I think my dad paid hell after that. He never said a word. He was so cold. But, later, I realized that in all the years I went there to swim or play tennis, I never saw a black member.

Jimmy Dean (sausage company) came up to me and whispered, “take care of yourself girl” and I knew what he meant. He then shook my date’s hand and poured out compliments, questions, and information about her to the point where we both stared at each other intently.

You see, my date was black and I was white, white, white. It wasn’t until he was identified as one of the Doomsday Guardians that the mind’s gaze stopped. The women would just give me disgusted looks until they realized who he was and then it was a bit of a relief.

We met at Biff’s and later at the Byron Nelson Golf Tournament. I was Miss Irving. He was Mr. Everything. Everyone wanted to touch him: shake his hand, pat his back, take a picture. We both had braces on our teeth.

“There’s a Dallas Cowboy in the lobby!” said one girl as she entered the common bathroom in my dorm at SMU where I was a student. I knew he was there for me, but they weren’t. – Guess who’s in the lobby! Another code announced that he entered.

By the time I took the elevator down to the lobby, a crowd had gathered. They parted like the Red Sea, when he saw him, he smiled and stretched out his arm. It was magic and for weeks I was flooded with questions.

He invited me to a charity event sponsored by the milk company that had just signed him up as a speaker. I couldn’t believe it. Within hours we mingled with Roger Staubach, Coach Tom Landry, “Hollywood” Henderson, Ed “Too Loud” Jones and even Tony Dorsett. Charlie Waters and his wife Rosie were ready to take pictures in Town and Country – each more interesting than the other.

But they were the Dallas Cowboys, and they were undefeated: The New Stadium. Super bowl winner. American team. They were on top of their game and everyone knew it.

He picked me up at my bedroom and led me to the smallest sports car I had ever ridden in. I’m six feet tall, barefoot, and that night, I was wearing heels. He still disappointed me.

We had a great time that night. Then we stopped at a club in Edison where the waiter brought us a mug of hot chocolate before we ordered. None of us drank and he was known there, so they just looked after him. We passed the drink back and forth and talked. He had no idea how exciting it was for me to meet Tom Landry, a living legend.

After that he called several times, but I didn’t go with him again. I was trying to adjust to a very tough college and it took all my attention. Then I went abroad to study in England and followed him. He was special and I only had one date before him and that was my high school graduation when my best friend Barry Banks had to convince someone to take me.

I was geek-tall, skinny, and dressed up when I was 17. (Thanks Dad, that’s how they made Ugly Betty ugly!) I wasn’t a cheerleader. I was one of the editors of the school newspaper and vice president of my class. Then I was asked by this superstar and I had the night of my life. I still cherish the memory, but not of the looks and judgmental looks received by women, not men. They gave me visual hell.

Racism is not what is said or done; this is the feeling of it. No one needed to say anything about how they felt seeing the “mixed” couple. I felt the energy of stares and judgment mixed within them.

I have never been a racist and I hope I never am. I enjoy the differences and similarities of each ethnic group and do not find it offensive to acknowledge them. My date was a perfect gentleman and we had an elegant night together. I wouldn’t trade the memory for anything.

Thank you Harvey Martin and may he rest in peace (Pancreatic cancer took his life at 51)
