The Alpha Male Takes Risks

One of the hallmarks of an Alpha male is that he is willing to take risks to improve his situation. This contrasts with the Beta male, who by nature plays it safe.

It might be good to know how to define a beta male versus an alpha male. In primate societies (of which we are a part) there is a social hierarchy that has evolved from primate ancestors to us humans. This hierarchy, usually expressed in men of primate cultures, can be divided into two main groups. The first is the Alpha Male, or troop leader. The Alpha Male is responsible for keeping the troop safe from predators and other threatening males from other groups. In addition, the Alpha Male is also responsible for providing for the other needs of the troop. In human society, the Alpha Male, the clan leader, is responsible for the emotional, financial, social, nutritional, and physical well-being of his clan members. This is not new, it is just human nature.

It is said that the Alpha Male will also make himself attractive to women. The female, physically smaller and weaker as well as slower, needs protection if she is not only to survive in the forest, but to survive long enough to reproduce and pass on her genes to the next generation. That’s why women find it hard to attract Alpha males – this is still true in humans. Women want a talented man who will be the leader of the men and take care of all their needs and the needs of the entire tribe and do it from a position of power and authority.

A Beta Male, on the other hand, is a follower. He’s angry, which means he hides things (whereas an Alpha Male is more straightforward). From a human perspective, this can be manifested by trying to “bribe” people into liking them, doing favors for others to return favors, chasing women they date, and a host of other things. Beta Males are actually categorized by their inactivity into any situation. What this implies is that the Beta Male will resort to backstabbing, backbiting and whining when he doesn’t get his way.

Now that we’ve established that, we can see why the Alpha Male and the Beta Male differ in the risk department. If a man is an Alpha male, it means that he puts himself in danger and opens himself up to more risks. Honestly, who is more dangerous than the leader of the group? Think of the officer who leads the army, or the quarterback of the team, or perhaps the CEO of a business. The higher you go in the social hierarchy, the more people expect you to die and the faster they want it to happen so they can take your place. Sometimes this is done directly by other Alpha males and sometimes it is done passively by Beta Male types.

So being the leader of a group means that you expose yourself to “attacks” by others. It also means that if the Alpha Male fails, the life of the entire tribe (or in our case, a company, military unit or football team) is at stake. Therefore, the Alpha Male must confidently take the risks that come his way.

But the Beta male is naturally the one who stands in the Alpha Male’s shadow. Like the Alpha male (and any male) he wants to step up and be the leader, but for some reason he doesn’t have the ability or confidence to do so. The nature of the Beta Male is to “play it safe” and hope that the opportunity falls into his lap. Again, the Beta male will resort to passive tactics such as bribery or ass-kissing or favoring someone so that they reward him with a higher position in the clan. (Note that tribe in this sense includes any organization or group of which a man may find himself a part)

So the Beta Male doesn’t take risks – in a sense, he eats scraps from the Alpha Male’s table and is happy about it. This means that her loyalty will soon shift to whoever has the ability to feed her the best, that is, what she wants to give to her. By the way, all men start out as beta males, but some of them grow up to become alpha males – these are the guys who take risks in life.

This can certainly be seen in the business environment. There are some guys who are drones – who play it safe – who do enough to keep their jobs and get by. Sometimes they get promoted just because someone else moves up or dies, but more often than not they reach a comfort level and just stay there. They trade in the grand lifestyle of the Alpha Male for the safety of the Beta Male.

What to say in romance? Well, it can be clearly seen there too. Ever go to a club and see a bunch of guys with drinks around their chests watching the action? Guys who go there hoping (or worse EXPECTING) a girl to come and talk to them? They don’t dare to risk being shot, so they stand there and hope that people will come to them.

Then there are the guys in the club who risk getting shot. They appeal to people, especially they appeal to women – sometimes they shoot, and sometimes they succeed in relation to success. But the fact that they’re willing to take a risk opens them up to more opportunities than a passive beta male who doesn’t make any connections because they don’t take the “risk” of being hit on.

Additionally, women want men who are willing to take risks. Back in the days of our ancestors, a guy who could take risks was a guy who was likely to be an Alpha male – which meant he would be a leader – and this meant that he not only had the strength and resources to protect has her and their potential offspring, but that he had the entire tribe’s resources at his disposal! If the name of the game is survival, then a woman who is attached to an Alpha Male has the best chance of survival.

This means that the very act of approaching a woman at all, that is, showing that he is taking risks, automatically pushes all the attraction buttons in a woman’s brain. This alone will give her points in his book and increase the chances of a man hooking up with a woman. The Beta Male, on the other hand, loses points when he stands still and is passive when it comes to women. This means that in the world of romance, no one starts with a score of zero – you either start positive (the Alpha Male who takes risks and gets close) or negative (the Beta Male who passively sits and watches).

We can’t escape the brain wiring that got us here. Back in our forest days it was the Alpha male who risked becoming the Alpha male and had an army to help him survive (as he helped survive) to reproduce with the females of the world. That brain wiring that got us here is still alive and well in our brains, so it’s the guy who’s strong and takes risks that will eventually get the girl. Not just a girl, but a job, money, and even things like fame and fortune and fame.
