Why the Mighty Teams Fail at the Pop Warner and AYF National Championships

Stumbling gorillas

The AYF and Pop Warner National Championships featured many very good youth football teams that dominated their opponents throughout the season. Several of the coaches I spoke with quoted their most impressive quotes and summaries that bordered on the absurd. One coach was 15-0 with 510-6 points, another was 14-0 with 456-14 points.

While this isn’t necessarily the rule, there have been plenty of teams who, for whatever reason, ruled their contenders with an iron fist and experienced very little trouble before the tournament. A few coaches told me they didn’t punt at all all season, a few others mentioned they punted 2 times or less. At least 30 coaches said they haven’t trailed in a game all year. I like to call these teams “gorilla” teams, they control the forest and have no legitimate threat to control their forest. They dominate their competition and often face teams that are mentally outmatched by the appearance of gorilla teams or the reputation of gorilla teams before they take the field.

However, when most gorilla teams arrive in Florida, they find that other gorillas are just as talented as they are, with little or no fear of confronting other gorillas. I saw a Pee Wee gorilla team at a Pop Warner tournament that appeared to be well trained on both offense and defense and with very good athletes to move the ball against a gorilla team. On their first play, they barely missed it and it went just 12 yards, giving their opponent very good field position. On their next play — 4th and 6 from their own 40 — they decided to go for it and failed. On the next possession on 4th and 7, they kicked a 14-yarder. In another situation, they had 4th and 9 and faked the punt, it was a terrible attempt, both the kicker and the short player they hit were only a yard away, no one was fooled and the punt it was bad, the other team recovered and scored. In their last situation, they had 4th and 11 from their own 20-yard line. Since they were so weak and their fakes were just as bad, they decided to go for it and were stuffed to seal their fate.

Shooting game

This game was played on one side of the field for the entire game due to poor hitting by one team and very good hitting by the opponent. The opposing team would consistently gain 30 yards or only get 4th downs due to their field position. The winning team was able to capitalize on a few more chances due to the pitch position, while the losing team was unable to go deeper into their playbook. In the end, the punting game was the deciding factor in this game, which was decided by a touchdown.

Neither team moved the ball very well, but on each exchange, one team gained 20 yards or more of field position, which eventually won them. It was clear that the losing team had not hit much, if at all, during their season. They didn’t need to, but they certainly couldn’t upgrade it for the day they might need it.

The same goes for some of the blocking scheme fixes. Like any youth soccer league with about 100 teams, our league has very good teams, good teams, average teams and poor teams, coaching runs the gamut. Depending on the schedule, we can have a large number of teams where we can run 12-14 base plays with our normal rules and blocking schemes and win easily if we execute well and the technique and effort of our players to potentially close. But there are always teams that are bigger, faster and better than us on the schedule, if not in the regular season, then in the playoffs or when we play in tournaments outside of the conference. Against teams you bully, things like traps, impact plays, false pulls, misdirection, key plays, or screens may not be as effective. When you play teams with players who don’t play aggressively or aren’t well coached, these types of plays or tactics often fail because those players respond and play differently than well-coached or aggressive players. The danger is that when you make the wrong draw or key play and it doesn’t work against a weaker team, the coaching staff and players lose confidence in the play or setup and it is either put on the back burner or abandoned altogether. .

Rule problems

In many leagues, the rules also do not allow you to develop your teams to win the championship. The mercy rules of many leagues prevent you from working on and developing aspects of your game that you will need when you play on the bigger stage. There are very few teams that win national championships without the threat of a legitimate pass or special teams. I’m not talking about going Air Raid and throwing 70% of the time, I’m talking about being able to hit the field with the potential of a completed pass that goes 20 yards or more. In many leagues, once you’re up 3-4 shots, you’re not allowed to throw the football. These mercy rules are well intended and needed in many places where coaches are out of control, but they can also hinder team development.

What should be done? If you think your team can be a contender for a league or national title, you need to improve the parts of the game that you won’t need until you face another gorilla. You MUST improve those parts of the game that you didn’t need to beat a weaker or average opponent with, which means spending practice time on it. If you own a competitive youth soccer team, you may need to play inside the game. To work on your punting game, go ahead when leading by 3-4 points and go for a third down to gain experience. In games where you believe your team has the upper hand, start throwing the ball earlier than usual, or in the downs, you usually don’t throw the ball. Even if your base games are doing extremely well, use your influence or false pull/wrong way. Keep in mind the ultimate goal, which is not only to beat your opponent today, but to win the last match against another gorilla. If you control the game on offense, put your weaker players on defense early to keep the score tight enough to avoid the mercy rule so you can work on your offense and special teams. I don’t get caught up in the final score, I could care less about the shutout, my goal is to prepare the team to its full potential and win that big final game.

Coaching

To win on the big stage, in most cases you’ll need to pull out all the tricks you have in your bag to defeat the other gorillas in the jungle. Take a few moments before each game to think about your ultimate goals, not get caught up in the moment and excitement of the game that day. Write some of the things you need to do on the game sheet to remind you. My game is told three sheets: Punt, Wrong, Burst 43 G, Buck, Smoke Pass, all the things we needed later in the season. There were points in that game where I was able to work on all five points of emphasis. When you get to that final match, you’ll be glad you took the time to fully prepare for that opponent, it often makes the difference.
