College Football Mayhem – Flagrant Helmet-to-Helmet Shots Need to Stop Before Someone Gets Killed

I watch college football because it’s rough, tough, exciting and fun. Parity in college football today means that no team is immune to an upset on any given game day. I don’t watch college football because it’s too bad.

After watching the shooting of Washington quarterback Jake Locker on Saturday (11-10-07), my emotions ran the gamut from concern to anger to anger to action.

There is no penalty even for rough hitting. Not only should a penalty be assessed for excessive roughness or unsportsmanlike conduct, the offending player should be sent off immediately.

In professional football, this type of illegal tackle is not tolerated because the player is defenseless when the tackle is hit. Why it is even tolerated and celebrated in college football is beyond me.

I don’t care if the hit is considered accidental or intentional. It doesn’t matter. This brutal blow could have cost Jake Locker his career, it could have paralyzed him for life, or even killed him if he broke his neck.

This kind of brutal fighting is not football, so much as controlled and deliberate chaos. Not long ago, some coaches would reward such hits, especially when the opposing team’s star player was stretchered off the field.

Oregon State players have developed a reputation for intense play. In this particular game, which the Beavers won 29-23, the officials lost control of the game as more taunting, pushing and shoving resulted in 3 more Beavers and 1 Husky being ejected.

I take no comfort in the fact that the Beaver player who delivered the wild hit apparently apologized and later prayed for Locker. It might allow the player in question to shake off any guilt about the hit, but no amount of prayer would have helped one iota if Locker had been paralyzed or killed by the hit.

These rude helmet-to-helmet blows must stop. Period. Don’t waste your precious time trying to convince me that these hits are random. Nine out of 10 players don’t even try to fight players anymore. They throw their bodies at them in hopes of knocking them over.

The tackle can be learned in spring training, but it’s rarely practiced on the field right now. Why do you think we get 74-62 and 73-68 (these are actual scores from actual games). Defenders use their bodies as missiles to bring people down.

Instead of secretly rewarding players for helmet-to-helmet hits, coaches should bench players who use tactics to bring players down. Even if the rules committee disallows the tactic, coaches must enforce and enforce the rule to end it. Some coaches seem to only care if it’s their player on the receiving end of a brutal helmet-to-helmet attack.

There have been enough tragic and career-ending injuries in football at all levels during fair play without the sport growing into a slam dunk with targeted and crude helmet-to-helmet hits.

Please don’t tell me about the sudden hits to the helmet. A player can easily point his head to the midsection or legs of the runner as well as his head if he wants to tackle someone that way.

When was the last time you saw a running back cross the line of scrimmage on his own 30-yard line and then head 70 yards to the end zone? When was the last time you saw a receiver catch the ball on his 30 and run with his head 70 yards for a touchdown?

When you hit the helmet, you must immediately calculate the coordinates, lower your head to the position of the projectile and put yourself on your target. There are no accidental hits to the helmet.

Later that night, I saw on a football recap that Hawaii quarterback Colt Brennen was on the sidelines of the unfortunate helmet. I believe the intent was to cripple Brennen so he couldn’t stand up straight. Like Locker, Brennen could have been instantly paralyzed or even killed by the action.

How stupid is it that a college sport can kill its players? The NCAA needs to take its feet off the counter, stop counting how much money its empire makes, and deal with this issue with competence. The NCAA has no problem being a major nuisance over the little things, how about addressing the bigger issue of their players’ safety?

If the NCAA were ever forced to open their books as a non-profit corporation and come clean about how much money they generate for themselves, their faces would be redder than the sea of red among Nebraska fans at a Cornhusker football game.

It goes without saying that I am disappointed that Washington lost their road game to Oregon State, lost their chance at a bowl game, and is now facing their 4th losing season.

The unnecessary and flagrant helmet-to-helmet shot on Jake Locker only added to Washington’s struggle to turn its program around.

Instead of calling for the head of coach Ty Willingham and the heads of the Washington coaching staff, how about saving the head of Locker and the head of every other player who was hurt by the unfair and callous hit?
