San Antonio Independent School District Welcome New Additions

Douglas Academy

Current and former students, community members and San Antonio Schools staff members gathered in the historic Douglas Academy auditorium on September 26 for a homecoming celebration and ceremony to celebrate the completion of a major construction and renovation project at the school.

“Douglas Academy has a rich history and tradition. Our children here inherit that history, and they have the potential to become what they want to be,” said District Superintendent Dr. Robert J. During the scene where the legend is that Louis says. Armstrong, Billie Holiday and WV King performed once.

With $9.3 million from the San Antonio Independent School District’s 1997 Bond Program, improvements to the school included renovations to the three-story 1915 school’s classrooms, auditorium and gymnasium. The building, which used to be a technical store, was turned into a library.

New construction added a wing to this San Antonio school with classrooms, a cafeteria and a cafeteria. Two courtyards, a central tower with an elevator and stairs connect the old with the new for access.

With a total area of 73,692 square feet, the facility houses 450 students, including those in the Life Steps and Early Childhood programs.

The original wood floors and auditorium seating were carefully restored and reinstalled at this San Antonio school by District Plant Service personnel. The stage and walls were also repainted.

“Not only do we have new things that we’re excited about, but we’re also honoring the history of this school,” said Principal Melanie Her-Zepeda.

The colors, tiles, and wall textures throughout the campus represent the African-American and Mexican-American cultures of the neighborhood surrounding this San Antonio school. “This school is really rich in history. We respect the neighborhood as it is, but we also respect where this school came from,” Her-Zepeda added.

Douglas Academy traces its origins to 1869, when it opened for the children of freed African-American slaves in downtown San Antonio. In 1902, it was given to the anti-slavery orator and statesman. The school was moved to its present location in 1915 as a high school. It became a secondary school in 1932.

Beginning in 1970, Douglas served as a school for grades 3 through 5. In 2002, the school expanded to include Kindergarten through 2nd grade while students were attending the Burnet Elementary campus in St. Barrera. A 6th grade was added in 2004, converting the school to a pre-kindergarten through 6th grade Academy. When the construction project was completed in August, students and staff returned to their original campus.

The new school has yet to be named

San Antonio Independent School District trustees and district leaders will join Foster and Schenck elementary school students Sept. 21 for SAISD’s newest campus, located in the 9200 block of South Presa Street. The new academy, the district’s first in 40 years, will serve the educational needs of the growing student population in SAISD’s southeast sector.

The planned two-story academy, which has yet to be named, will house 750 students in pre-kindergarten through 8th grade on 18 acres. The building will have an exterior design reminiscent of nearby historic missions. The elementary classrooms at this San Antonio school have elementary-level playgrounds and learning spaces equipped for teaching, physical education, and music. Senior classrooms will include an art room, science labs and two music rooms with acoustic areas for band, choir, orchestra or mariachi.

Plans for the newest San Antonio school also include a gymnasium with locker rooms for girls and boys, practice fields for football/soccer, a multi-purpose field, computer labs, a library and a cafeteria for various school activities. The cost of the construction project is $20.6 million, financed by interest from the district’s bond programs. The school will serve families in the new Mission Creek subdivision and surrounding neighborhoods, where students currently attend Foster and Schenck Elementary Schools and Connell Middle School.
