Fantasy Football – Rookie Tight Ends

Let’s imagine for a second that your fantasy football project is taking place. Now it’s the 13th round and you realize you forgot to draft the tight end. All the big names (Witten, Gates, Ton-Gon, even Heap) disappeared a few hours ago, and Robert Royal isn’t looking too promising. Well rookie, here’s a look at some rookies who could help your team and make an immediate impact this year.

First, we’ll start with the most obvious choice: Brandon Pettigrew. The 6’5″, 260 pound forward polishes a group of talented and young offensive players in Detroit. Pettigrew will be surrounded by Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith, as well as the redrafted Matthew Stafford, when (and if) the Lions’ offense takes the field.

Obviously, Pettigrew was the best tight end in this year’s draft. After all, the Lions quickly acquired him and made him the first tight end drafted in 2009. Lately, the Lions have also had a knack for acquiring explosive offensive talent (sans Joey Harrington). Don’t expect Pettigrew to put up Antonio Gates-like numbers. However, he still remains the Lions’ best option at tight end.

Another rookie tight end to consider is Chase Coffman. Coffman’s larger frame (6’6″, 244 pounds) is a bigger risk than Pettigrew on draft day. For starters, he was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals. They only averaged 150.4 passing yards per game last year. Second, Coffman will. play second fiddle to Reggie Kelly. But, there’s a flip side! For starters, he’s behind Reggie Kelly! Kelly went on to a disappointing sophomore season last year, which should give Marvin Lewis a chance to beat Coffman again. take a closer look. If Lewis wants to score a touchdown from his tight end, then Coffman is the answer, not Kelly.

While I wouldn’t recommend leaning too heavily on Pettigrew and Coffman, they are viable weeknight relievers and/or bench players (they are on the Bengals and Lions, after all). Pettigrew offers more upside and who knows, he could put up decent numbers. If so, you might end up talking some trash with that guy in your league who allegedly “discovered” Matt Forte before “anyone had even heard of him.”

However, if your draft is still ongoing and you still want to wait on the tight end, well, Jermaine Gresham is coming out next year.
