Large Vs. Small Universities

Whether you’re a senior in high school, choosing college, or already in college and looking to transfer, you’ll still want to be aware of the pros and cons of a school of your size. I went to a public university with over 46,000 students, but I had friends who attended small private schools with 5,000 students. I’ll take the next few paragraphs to list some of the pros and cons. This is all based on my opinions and personal experience at a great university. My assessment of small private schools may be off because I have never personally attended one.

When you think of a big university (Texas, Ohio, University of Florida), you think of sports. One of the main advantages of going to a large university is their athletic programs. If you are a sports fan, then attending a Division I football school may influence your decision. Televised games, pep rallies, homecoming parades, and competitions are all part of being at a big university. However, you don’t have to love sports to go to a DI school. There are thousands of students at major universities who don’t want anything to do with sports, and that’s okay because there’s so much more to do.

Large schools also have large libraries and media centers. There are plenty of places to study and computer labs to get your work done during class. I would go to the computer lab (there were hundreds of computers) between classes and surf the internet or do my homework the night before. A small school may only have one library, and it may be far from your driveway. In a large school, there is a library, study hall or computer lab in every corner.

Food is another advantage of studying at a large university. They have several dining halls and are close to Dunkin’ Donuts, Starbucks, Chik-Fil-A, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and basically any other fast food place you can think of in the middle of campus. You can get food anywhere. And the kitchens actually have edible food. They don’t give Helda three days’ worth of meat or peas. Every morning we had freshly made omelets with bacon and pancakes. I’m sure you can’t get that at Flagler College.

Some other immediate benefits of a large university are the social aspects (fraternities and sororities, schools, clubs, student government, etc.). Most universities have outstanding faculty who know what they are doing. Another advantage is that on-campus housing is available for freshmen (and sometimes sophomores). This allows you to wake up 10 minutes before class starts and walk around in your PJs.

Some of the disadvantages of a large school are the large classes. Chances are you could have a class with 900 people. No matter what you say or how many questions you ask in class, the professor will not know your name. Many classes are taught by Teaching Assistants, which means you won’t get the high quality you want. At a large university you are just a number to some people and you can get lost in the crowd. Finally, all professors think they are a hot shot and care more about their research than helping students.

On the other hand, small universities have smaller classes. These smaller classes can focus more on learning and hands-on experience. I’ve never attended a junior college, but they most likely have individual majors. It is not a set curriculum that thousands of people follow every semester. With smaller classes, students can get to know their professors better. This is great when it’s time to find letters of recommendation. Try getting a letter from a teacher when you were just one of 900 students in a class.

Another pro of attending a small college is that the counselors know the students very well. Try to see a counselor at a liberal arts college at a major university. They see hundreds of kids a day and they never remember your name or what classes you’re in. Also, there is a greater sense of community at a small school. You are not just an ID card number, here you are a person with a face and a name.
