Game Preparation – The Pregame Address in Australian Football

In 1968, I was in my second year coaching the Queensland state schoolboys team in the Australian National Football Championship in Melbourne. Our first game against Western Australia was played at the hallowed grounds of the Melbourne Cricket Ground, home of our national game. It was exciting for the boys to play there and for me to be the coach.

Below are the notes I said or said about our first game in this National Football Carnival. Before the team name and pre-match address, I talked to each team member and checked how they were feeling.

These are the points I told the players. As a young coach, I now realize that I probably talked too long and said too many things. However, from the developing football state of Queensland, we were in training mode with our boys. We needed to continue to emphasize the fundamentals of our game plan until they became second nature.

  • Play whenever you can. Hard game; hard in front; inside his man and move the ball wide in the backline.

  • Teamwork: don’t forget to copy; to continue talking; watch carefully when the football is two shots and keep on shepherding.

  • The fight should be tough/tough. Compete everything; hitting the ball; and chase them all.

  • Position game:

Forwards must play wide; look for pieces; persistence in front of goals; keep talking and look for your full progress.

Back – should be strong; shoulder to shoulder with your opponent; play inside your man; and used long driving shots. When attacking from defenders, the rover should be in front of the team and the wingers should be behind the team.

  • Kicking – always use explosive kicks when passing or otherwise driving long from the center straight towards the goal to the goal line. Note the effects of the grease ball and the wind and use them to your advantage.

  • Note that the oval has wide wings and deep pockets. Use the north side of the oval to attack.

  • Warm Up: It is important to do this well

  • The football slipped. So watch the ball fly past the back of the box in high-scoring competitions. Always keep the football in front of you and when you don’t get it clean, football the ball.

  • Umpiring – whistling.

I make this point strongly because in the same game in 1967 in Hobart, Western Australia, two goals were scored when a defender claimed to the referee that he had twice touched the marked football. Western Australia only played while scoring two goals

Some observations:

  1. In the 1960s Queensland there was no shortage of experienced junior coaches or school coaches. So we had to educate the players about the whys and wherefores of the game. Given this, the length of my team’s address could be justified. This will not be the case in 21St century as I write this.

  2. The team included a number of players who were in Australia’s second Carnival. Their experience has helped improve the team’s performance and kept it competitive in most every game. Fitness and skill levels let the team down as fatigue set in at the end of every game.

  3. Our team’s underachieving youth club players quickly learned from our training program and outperformed their club opponents. Often we used these players in new positions to see them.

  4. The players found the softer pitches in Melbourne difficult as they were used to the ball bouncing higher on the firmer pitches in Queensland.

  5. The players saw the referee’s interpretation of the rules as different from what happened at home.

  6. It is important for the reader to understand that the game has changed significantly since these notes were used. Some may seem incongruous at 21St century
