Cleveland Browns – Off Season Team Needs

The Browns were, by all accounts, the worst team in the NFL in the 2009 season. It’s a miracle Eric Mangini is still eating Brown out of his paycheck. But for a team in turmoil, there’s certainly plenty of talent in this squad. Now it’s up to football kingpin Mike Holmgren to bring that talent together and create winning ways.

What went wrong in 2009: Don’t let the Browns’ 5-11 record fool you. The Browns started the 2009 season 1-11 before winning their last 4 against the Steelers, Chiefs, Raiders and Jaguars. Another Browns win? Against bills. The Steelers were good last season, but were clearly a shell of their former Super Bowl winners. 4 other teams? Come on, you can’t seriously tell me that any of those 4 teams scare you.

The Browns’ defense ranked in the bottom half of the league in both rushing and pass defense. But don’t let these numbers fool you. The Browns defense has probably been on the field more than any other team this year. I had a chance to watch the Browns a few times this year and boy was their offense pathetic. The Browns had the 3rd fewest 1st downs in the league. And on top of that, the Browns converted just 32.6% of their third down opportunities last season. I’ll tell you what the Browns couldn’t do on offense. They couldn’t run the ball. They could not pass the ball. They couldn’t get a solid quarterfinal game. They couldn’t get the receivers open. They couldn’t protect the defender. They couldn’t move the chains. So what exactly did this crime do? Well, they have a talented offensive line (Joe Thomas, Eric Steinbach) and that’s about it.

But don’t get me wrong. It’s not like the 2009 edition of the Browns defense was compared to the 2000 Ravens or anything. They had their share of issues. They had trouble stopping both the run and the pass. And at times, the Browns looked a lot like a high school team on the field. However, there is plenty of talent on this side of the ball. Sean Rodgers, D’Quelle Jackson, and Kamerion Wimbley are all guys you can build your defense around. Even Eric Wright has talent and can be a no. 2 towers for the Browns. It really only takes someone like Mike Holmgren to combine that talent into a serviceable defense.

Who might be gone: Well, Derek Anderson, Rex Tucker, Jamal Lewis, Hank Poteat, Hank Fraley, Brodney Poole and Rex Hadnot (among others) have already been shown the door. Shawn Rodgers is also reportedly looking to make a trade. Now there are complaints about the departure of Brady Quinn. When a team is this bad, as I said before, there is no safe place for players to work.

Team’s Biggest Need: Aside from quarterback and receiver, the Browns are at least average everywhere. This gives the Browns the luxury of entering the draft to truly select the best player available. Ideally, the Browns would love to get one of the top two quarterbacks (Jimmy Clausen, Sam Bradford) in the draft. However, assuming both quarterbacks are off the board. 7 picks, Eric Berry could fall here. Gerald McCoy could fall here. If neither of those two players are available, the Browns could reach for a guy like Joe Haden or Dez Bryant. While neither player had a great combine, both are great talents who can bring instant life to a defense or offense, respectively.

The Browns have already brought in Seneca Wallace, Tony Paschos, Antonio Bryant, Scott Fujita, and so far Ben Watson. There has also been some rumblings about former Panther Jake Delhomme coming to Cleveland. Even if Delhomme comes to town, all of these signings are good, but not great. The Browns still need a receiver and a quarterback after releasing Donte Stallworth and Derek Anderson (not that either player played significantly in 2009, if they played at all). Since the Browns have yet to make a serious play for any big receiver quarterbacks in free agency, it’s safe to assume the Browns will address those needs through the draft. Keep your radar on guys like Dezmon Briscoe, Tony Pike and Damian Williams coming up on draft day.
