Strongman Vs Power Cleans – Part 2

In part 1 of this series on Strongman Training for Athletes, I make the case that Strongman Training can be a great option for building strong and explosive athletes and a viable replacement for Olympic lifting.

Here I discuss some of my favorite Strongman exercises to get your athletes super fast and furious!

Wheel slip

This exercise is a staple of Strongman and a large part of the football strength programs I develop for my athletes. If there is any exercise that works the whole body from “The Rooter To The Tooter” – It’s the spinning wheel.

Getting a 300, 400 or 700 pound tire is a lot easier than most people think. Also, the best part about this hardware tool is that it’s FREE! All you need to do is search your phone book for a tire company in your city. They have tons of these things and they have to throw them away and it costs them money. When someone calls and says they’re willing to take one off their hands for free, they’re happy as hell. The biggest challenge will be finding a way to get it to your facility. Many times the tire yard will drop it off for you; make sure you tip the delivery guy well.

Push the car

It’s as simple as it sounds – push the car. That’s it. But make no mistake, this workout isn’t just fun and brutal—it’s actually very rewarding. When pushing the car it is important that you lean forward which creates a “positive knee angle”. This develops the quads, which are the dominant muscles activated during short sprints and changes of direction.

This is probably the most practical exercise in terms of equipment. You only need one car, the bigger the better. I’ve heard stories about Mike Alstott and how he used to push his Jeep around college campuses to get into football shape. If Mike Alstott can do it, it must be good!

Farmers take

I am often asked, “What are the best general exercises for strength and conditioning?” My answer without hesitation is always – Farmers lead. There is NOTHING this exercise will not do. In addition to a killer conditioner, farmers carry arms, legs, cores, shoulders, neck, wrists, eyelids, eyelashes, and earlobes that I have yet to discover.

What makes this exercise even more amazing is that anyone can do it anywhere, with little or no equipment. Everything from the Torpedoes you see those beasts on ESPN2; to milk jugs full of sand will make you strong and crazy fast.

Sandbag loading

This is another exercise that is easy to put together. In fact, when I first started training athletes at the local park, it was all I had to use. I just went to Home Depot (maybe in your town) bought a few bags of pea gravel and 80lbs, threw them in a contractor bag and taped them shut. After a while I realized we needed heavier bags, so I bought some large army duffle bags and threw the smaller ones in there. Now I have bags from 40 pounds to almost 300!

This exercise is very simple – grab it and go! But make no mistake, it is NOT easy. This exercise is also on my list of best total body conditioners.

Clear and click

We all use the famous Olympic lifts or have trained someone to use the famous Olympic lifts. And for good reason, they train the entire body and produce faster, stronger athletes. But I will make them a little different.

When you use a half-full keg to clear and tap, you play a whole new game. First of all, neutral dust is more specific to football, especially if you are a lineman. Second, the water (or beer) you used to fill the keg will circulate in there, making this exercise a real air conditioner!

If you want to get brutally strong and fast, you need to add this powerful workout to your routine.

Dragging

This is all my training programs and I use this exercise for several different reasons.

First, pulling the sled forward is a great chain builder. Nothing gets those lazy bums into tip top shape like a sled pull. Second, dragging the sled backwards does for quads what dragging forwards does for glutes…fries em! Third, when done for distances over 50 yards or with short rest intervals, this is one of my favorite strength/conditioning exercises. Finally, since your legs are always moving concentrically, there is minimal pain involved in doing this exercise. You can drag today and try your best tomorrow.

He carries a keg

A thick, strong and powerful upper back is essential for building upper body strength that lasts. Everything from increased bench press to reduced risk of shoulder injury is associated with having a strong set of traps, rhomboids, and rear delts.

Nothing builds a strong upper back along with leg strength and agility like deadlifts. Carrying 50- to 300-pound kegs for short distances is one of my favorite ways to train generally weak athletes and athletes to build stamina, strength, and mental toughness.

I have a video on Strongman Training that shows a great example of how to do a “keg run”. You can train several athletes at the same time with such a device.

Bag or sand loading

Want to increase your speed and jumping ability?

A keg, sandbag, or stoner can take even a smooth ass and turn it into J-Lo. And we all know that a strong set of glutes is synonymous with explosive expansion and speed.
