The basis of basketball in our country is developed and nurtured at the level of junior basketball players. The quality of commitment and coaching at this level could change the overall health of basketball in the United States.
Those who coach youth have an incredible opportunity to develop youth as students, players, and young men. Character and values, along with a sense of teamwork, listening and hard work, are an enduring philosophy for youth mentors. However, all too often, this important work is done haphazardly and albeit with little effort and commitment. The result is a group of young people who are uninspired to play basketball and carry with them apathy and slow skill development.
At CoachRB, our goal is to encourage and challenge youth coaches to take their job seriously and learn all they can before and during their coaching experience. We are here to guide and provide young coaches with the tools they need to positively lead and develop young basketball players in our communities and our country.
For those of you who pour your heart into coaching youth sports, our hats are off to you. Your countless hours and efforts are used to improve the skills and enjoyment of thousands of young players. Blueprint for Positive Experiences in Youth Basketball Coaches’ Perspectives
1. Develop your coaching philosophy
a. Identify your main reason for coaching.
b. Be flexible and adapt your philosophy to your daily learning and experiences.
c. The young people you coach should be your first priority.
d. Keep it super simple……this is true from youth to the NBA.
2. Communication with young people
a. Develop the art of communication with children. This skill will be key to your tutor’s performance and your child’s enjoyment.
b. Watch the game by watching they not your eyes
c. Guidance should only be positive or constructive.
3. Work with parents
a. Being a leader means setting guidelines for parents and players. By doing this, you will reduce most of the potential obstacles for parents.
b. Let the players and parents address their own policies and philosophies.
c. Keep the child’s best interests in mind as if they were your child.
d. Determine “success” and share this with parents and children THEN work to meet this definition every day.
4. Development of the basics program
a. The best coaches are those who know that the game is about passing, dribbling, shooting and teamwork. AND can teach this to their players every day.
b. Learning fundamentals every day is a step-by-step process.
c. Appointment of a “Basic Skill Game” where players are tested on their ability to demonstrate fundamentals. By doing this, players will constantly work on passing, dribbling, shooting and teamwork. WHY? FACT – NBA players aren’t even “masters” of the game’s fundamentals, so why should we think kids are?
d. Always sacrifice fundamental work and hard training for games. We play a lot in our country when we are young.
5. Establish a positive and energetic environment
a. Share your practice goals with the players before each practice.
b. Design simple single goal drills that involve all players.
c. Keep the experience short and to the point, mixing in 2-on-2, 3-on-3 and 4-on-4 competition with the main focus.
d. Use the practice checklist to help organize the practice.
d. End the experiment by discussing the outcome of that day’s goals.
6. Playtime—Life Lessons
a. Games for children, period. Make this your goal and you will greatly improve your chances of enjoyment, satisfaction, and success.
b. Set a game time in advance and stick to it during the game.
c. Offense – If your players can pass, dribble and shoot, they can make plays. Designing an offense that is space and movement oriented, NOT play oriented. Coaches spoil the whole experience with “games”. Leave the fun games and strategy to the older kids.
d. Defense – Teach players to run, cue the player to be defended. It is ESSENTIAL to properly teach players the concept of “staying between your man and the ball”.
d. Teach players to run into the game and run away from the game.
f. Meet your team from the floor before and after the game. Talk about how great the game is and remember the basics of the game. Learn lessons that will stay with these young people for a lifetime.
They may not remember you in 30 years, but they will what you have taught them!
7. Evaluation — Pre-season and post-season
a. One of the biggest mistakes coaches make is to avoid this important opportunity to help their players.
b. Before the season, evaluate each player according to the menu of skills that will be taught during the season. Do this in great detail because it will pay off later. Share this with the kids and their parents so they know where you can see them before the season starts.
c. Use this information to remind players of areas for improvement as they gain skills and confidence throughout the year.
d. After the season, evaluate each player the same way you did before the season. CHILDREN ARE INTERESTED IN THIS. Their improvement in many areas proves to them what their work, listening and attitude has done for them. Parents will also greatly appreciate your efforts to highlight the improvement of each player. Also point out areas of improvement that they can tackle on their own as they prepare for next season.
d. You’d be surprised at how many middle school, high school, college and professional coaches miss this golden opportunity. This may be the biggest contribution you make to your basketball player’s life.
Coaches, I encourage each of you to apply yourself heart and soul to your coaching. A good youth coach knows that it’s 100 times more about communicating with the youth and keeping it simple than it is about fancy games, bad habits and winning!It’s called youth basketball, which is great. It’s not about the coach, the W, the parents or anyone’s ego…………..IT’S ALL ABOUT THE KIDS!
