Masculinity And The American Male

My six-year-old first grader is open, 100 mph from dawn to dusk. He is full of energy, laughter and excitement. He also sits in school for a good part of the day. Cameron, like other little boys, has trouble sitting still for hours as he reads, pushes his pencil, and paints. He has a very patient teacher who loves him very much but won’t let him fall below her expectations. He is familiar with the director’s office. He missed many breaks and was often deprived of the things he enjoyed most in life as punishment for misbehaving at school. We and his mother insist that he learn to obey and respect his elders and learn to cooperate and share with his peers and be self-controlled. It will be a long and tiring journey, but we are very confident that Cameron will learn these lessons well and grow into a fine young man one day.

We are very pleased with his teaching experience, but we are also aware of the difficult dynamics of raising teenage boys. Their flamboyant display of energy is often considered detrimental to learning, and desperate attempts are made to suppress it. Young girls seem to thrive in a system that requires them to sit still and develop collaborative and creative skills. Little male warriors are expected to do the same. If little boys can’t sit still and behave like little girls, they are often given a diagnosis of ADHD and given Ritalin to suppress the behavior. Learning and behavior problems are not treated by Ritalin. Ritalin only treats the symptoms, the problem is still there. Isn’t it disturbing that so many child psychologists begin their diagnosis by claiming that they too have ADHD? Our society is madly dependent on chemicals to treat the symptoms of their emotional, physical and mental problems, while neglecting the opportunity to discover and destroy the root causes of their problems.

If a young boy’s misbehavior can be calmed and controlled, it can be of great benefit to the child’s development and to society as a whole. These energetic and masculine expressions should be nurtured and developed, not chemically suppressed or destroyed. An aggressive and independent boy who is “too big for his British” may one day be a point guard on the football team or a point guard on the basketball team. He can lead a group of Navy Seals to save innocent lives by capturing or killing an evil tyrant. He can help colonize the moon, build an empire, or change the world he lives in through a surprising discovery or invention. Shouldn’t we be monitoring the development of a teenage boy’s masculinity instead of feminizing him?

My son will likely move on to 7th or 8th grade before he eventually becomes a male teacher. By the time he graduates from high school, he will have accumulated 14,000 hours of instruction in school. Female characters will dominate his life. So, as his father, I decided to teach and show him manhood. Wrestling tournaments, fishing and camping trips, baseball, and target practice are activities that help him differentiate his masculine role. There are many life lessons to be learned through competition and adventure. Children without fathers at home are at a disadvantage, but are often taught to blaze their own trail by male substitutes such as grandfathers, uncles, and mentors.

I have taught high school juniors for nearly 30 years. I have noticed that masculinity has slowly declined and almost disappeared among a large number of young men. Some are ashamed of masculine behavior. Some are simply confused about gender roles in society. Some have been taught that men’s superior strength should be used to dominate and control women, not to protect them. Male independence is a foreign concept for many. Many girls have had to take care of them all their lives, and they expect this to continue into adulthood. This has created a generation of young men who are afraid of the obligation of marriage or the prospect of actually having to provide for their father’s children. Many men in their 30s are still at home playing video games and complaining that mom hasn’t made dinner yet, while their female counterparts have earned bachelor’s degrees by age 22 and master’s degrees by age 24.

The feminization of men is just as problematic among Christians as it is in the secular world. There is very little male leadership outside of athletics at the Christian high school where I teach. If you visit some of the Christian ministries on our campus, you will see mostly women. We have feminized church services. Men may need a shoulder to lean on, but they often feel embarrassed when offered a shoulder to cry on.

Hollywood has more influence in teaching worldviews to our youth than the church. Television networks devote a large portion of their programming to the feminization of men. The average American family watches 5 hours of television a day. Your child may have watched more than 142,000 hours of television by his sixteenth birthday. (Nielson Research, Leichtman Research Group, Podcasting News.com) Everyone loves how Raymond is so sad, while Debra, his wife, seems to have the solution to all the problems.

Feminization of men is not always a passive and subconscious product of a popular trend in society. It is also an outgrowth of the radical feminist hate movement, born in the 1960s by women like Betty Friedan (The Feminine Mystique), who likened the suburban home to a concentration camp and encouraged women to look outside their marriages. Another radical feminist, Gloria Steinem, tried to incite hatred towards men and increase violence in the home to fantastic proportions. He opposed the element of “patriarchy” in society and stated that “the most dangerous situation for a woman is not a stranger on the street or even an enemy during the war, but a husband or a lover in the privacy of his own home.” (Revolution From Within: A Book of Self-Discovery, pp. 259-61) I would never minimize the problem of physical abuse in American homes, but making a blanket accusation that all men beat their wives is like saying all Eskimos are idiots. is or all Swedes are ugly. It shows how the feeling of hatred, in this case, hatred of men, can completely destroy her ability to be rational.

Our perfect example of manhood was Christ himself. True manhood is not dominating those who are weaker. Rather, it is about caring for and protecting them. When it came to protecting His Father and what belonged to His Father, Christ was not averse to using violence (Mark 11:15-19). He would never raise a hand to harm a woman. He treated women with utmost respect and his love for children was unparalleled. He thought so little of his earthly life that he was willing to submit himself to the humiliation of mass beatings by Roman soldiers and finally to a brutal death on a wooden cross to save for the one he loved.

True manhood is loving our wives as Christ loved the church. (Ephesians 5:25) Real men are not born alone. They raise their children with love and compassion. They sacrifice for them, protect them and spend a lot of time and energy in their lives. Our society needs men, real men, Christ-like men more than ever.
