100-0 Basketball Score? What That Means to Those of You Coaching Youth Football

100-0 I will not make you a boy

One of the biggest youth sports stories this month comes from, of all places, girls basketball. If you haven’t heard about it, you really need to get out more, the story has gone viral. While I prefer to dry paint or stick pieces under my fingernails before attending a girls basketball game, there may be a lesson here for us youth soccer coaches. A small Dallas, Texas school for children with ADD and ADHD, with only 20 female students, lost 100-0 last week. That’s right, sports fans, Covenant Christian ONE HUNDRED, Dallas Academy ZERO, that’s not a mistake.

The halftime score was 59-0 and the score at the end of three games was 88-0. What was very interesting in this story is that the winning team, Christian Covenant, was under pressure for almost the entire game. Dallas Academy rarely got the ball in the middle of the court, turning the game into what observers called a “layup drill.” Dallas Academy hadn’t lost a game, not one, in the last four seasons, so it wasn’t like the Covenant were 98-0 and feared that Dallas Academy was going for its 100-point game. Indeed, as the Covenant approached the century mark, the Covenant head coach and a number of their fans were wild. I have one word for it, WOW. I am impressed by the account and more by the attitude and behavior of the head coach and their “fans”.

He doesn’t apologize

When Covenant administrative officials apologized for their coach’s actions, Covenant’s head coach shrugged and said he had done nothing wrong. He claimed that his children were playing the game the way it was meant to be played. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not one of those Stewart Smalley guys, you know, “let’s not keep score, play every player the same, drink juice boxes and sing Kumbaya together after the coaches play”. Remember my teams went 97-13, we play to win, we don’t play Intramurals.

The cost of competitive sports

Competitive sports are a great learning environment for most kids, but in my opinion, this coach has gone above and beyond. When you’re in the lead, there’s nothing wrong with insuring a win, working on some skills and tactics your team needs to improve, and getting your backups to perform basic offense and defense. But when it’s clear that you have the upper hand and the other team has no way to come back, why keep pressing? One would have thought that after being able to press the 88-0 lead in the third quarter, it turns out that your kids know how to press against an incredible freshman team. But what about working in a half-time game or ANYTHING other than the press?

What did the Covenant kids get out of beating the Dallas Academy team? Maybe the girls learned that when you have someone down and out, kick them in the face again and rub their face into the concrete for good measure.

so what

Why not quit because you can? When you get to 88-0, it’s clear to every player, coach and parent who the best team is, no doubt. Heck, even the unbiased janitor or the little dog in mom’s purse knows that one team was vastly superior to the other. What would be the harm in not pressing in the last quarter or maybe playing a couple of kids out of position? Instead, Dallas Academy has now canceled its remaining games. Was Dallas Academy underpowered? Of course. Probably a bad coach. Were any of these girls going to play college basketball? No. But Academy kids will now be deprived of the opportunity to grow as human beings and develop the deep relationships that most kids get from playing team sports. I hope the Covenant coach is proud of this. maybe he can put it on his resume when he applies for jobs at Duke or Kentucky.

The coach gets his fee

Ultimately, the Covenant coach was fired a week later, largely because he disagreed with the schools decision to apologize to Dallas Academy. The Academy may have the last laugh, with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban hosting the Academy team in his suite at a Maverick game. Hopefully this story will teach those of us who coach youth soccer a valuable lesson in what not to do. While we didn’t have any video of the fiasco, Coach Phantom provided this video as a very close-up of how the game probably went down. I’m sure the coaches and fans were just as excited about their “BIG” win as the ones in this video.
