What Does Exceptional Business Success Require of Us?

To excel in business we must have conscious command of all our faculties, mind, body and heart to ensure our work/life balance. Then we can seize the opportunity to create exceptional results.

Western business schools us in the physical and mental aspects of business. We meet the requirements for:

1. Great processes to achieve complex team results and,

2. Great strategies to perform competitively and deliver to our customer’s expectations and beyond.

In contrast, Eastern business teaches us to discipline our heart and body to be committed and involved in the outcome of the project regardless of distractions.

I am reminded of the image of a samurai in absolute presence waiting for his opponent to be distracted in order to complete the task at hand.

Western business allows us to gain experience. From this we understand what we need to do to become competent in most situations, often physically and mentally. We also hope to resolve any heart discipline issues that are preventing us from channeling our true potential.

Organizations do not know when their business situation will change dramatically. What kind of leaders are they asking who are not thriving in their current environment to take advantage of the opportunities offered for success?

How do we unlock the true potential of people with great abilities who consistently perform on time and on purpose?

Humans are conscious and unconscious emotional beings. “There’s a lot of elegant neurophysiological data showing that the nervous system can’t take in everything, but can only scan it.

to find the external world ready for material through its wiring connections, its internal patterns, and its past experiences.”(1)

Brain development reflects this, with the patterned emotional center maturing in utero, while the rational center begins to mature at ages 4-5 and reaches full maturity in the late teens to early twenties.

From our early research on how to succeed in this world, we have formed some associated memories of actions, thoughts, and feelings. Some of these are strongly discouraged. The priority of any change management program is to disable these associated memories, which are potential landmines!

So why don’t we have a school to discipline our hearts?

By analyzing 300 published studies, Hogan (2) concluded that as humans we are very poor judges of our self-image: what others know about us, because we are preoccupied with our identity: what we want to believe, true about us.

Our colleagues may share the same view of our abilities, and we cling to beliefs about ourselves that are in conflict. It can be seen that we do not “walk our talk” or that our hearts are confused and unstable. However, we may not share this perception.

Some football teams understand this unconsciously. They taunt their opponent until they throw them off their game. Then they play their best football and the competition turns into a fight against them!

There are two options here:

1. Winning: To be more disciplined in their hearts and focused on winning, or,

2. Defeat: By changing the focus to fight the competition, turn it into defeat.

Disciplining our hearts requires us to learn the nature of these choices within ourselves, to be willing to choose consistently, and to accept the consequences of our choices. Then we begin to learn the wisdom to be a great leader and achieve the success we seek.

NB. This process is not logical or linear because memories are stored by association. Nonlinear learning was pioneered by the Russians and popularized in the West through accelerated learning methods.

(1) 2Dr. Candice Peart is a research professor in the Department of Physiology and Biophysics at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC. He was the first to map the pattern of heroin receptors in the brain and show its emotional “high” properties. He gives many lectures all over the country.

(2) Dr. Hogan is a prominent psychologist whose personality and leadership profiles are used by more than 50% of Fortune 100 companies in the US. He has more than 300 publications to his name.
