2009 Kansas City Chiefs Fantasy Football Preview

The 2009 Kansas City Chiefs have a completely new look from ’08, and those changes start at the top. Carl Peterson and Herman Edwards are gone, replaced by former Patriot Scott Pioli and former Cardinal offensive coordinator Todd Haley, respectively. Plus, the Chiefs have a new starting QB in former Patriot Matt Cassel, and three rookies are trying to bring excitement back to a franchise that has been home for years. How does Cassel affect others in terms of fantasy? Will Cassell have another successful season or will he be a bust? I’ll explore these questions and more as I analyze Kansas City’s fantasy potential heading into ’09.

Cassel was one of the biggest surprises of the 2008 NFL season, stepping in for an injured Tom Brady and throwing for 3,693 yards with 21 TDs and just 11 INTs. The numbers are even more impressive when you consider that Cassel hasn’t started a game since high school, when he thrust himself into the spotlight. Cassel’s performance has helped countless fantasy owners reach 400 yards in consecutive fantasy playoff seasons. Also, Cassel almost got into me because I barely got away from him in the Championship Round when he had 4 TD passes against the Raiders. Fortunately, I had a well-rounded enough team to pull it off, but needless to say I was a little worried watching him play against the Raiders. Cassell played his heart out for Josh McDipsheet last year, but now comes to a team looking for an attacking personality. In terms of weapons, Cassel has a little more, but not too much. WR Dwayne Bowe is entering his 3rd year and should be a star. Bowe will undoubtedly be Cassel’s number one target, especially after TE Tony Gonzalez left for Atlanta. Gonzalez’s departure is a huge loss for the Chiefs, and Cassel in particular, as the young QB certainly looked to the veterans often. Cassel Haley takes care of him, but overall I wouldn’t count him out of your fantasy teams this year. He’s a decent option for the No. 2 QB, but too many questions make him a fantasy No. 1 QB around the week-to-week.

The Chiefs’ running game has historically been the team’s strength with Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson each having monster seasons for the club. Holmes is long gone, Johnson looks set to return in ’09 but will be 30 and looks past his prime. I know this because I actually used my second pick on LJ, thinking he was a good value at the time. Things were never looking up for him in 2009 due to several variables, including playing in a terrible offense and sustaining numerous off-field issues that culminated in a suspension. Johnson finished the year rushing for 874 yards and 5 TDs. Johnson has shown flashes of his former self at times, including in Week 4 against Denver when he rushed for 198 yards and 2 scores, but it’s mostly been a disappointment for the former Penn St. product and the owners who drafted him. Johnson stated all year and most of the offseason that he wanted out of KC, but seemed to change his tune when Piloy and Haley came aboard. Honestly, I don’t really know what to think of LJ in 2009. I don’t think he’s done yet because he sat behind Holmes for a few years before finally getting his chance. Furthermore, the Chiefs don’t really have much in the way of backups behind LJ with Jamaal Charles and Colby Smith, and neither is going to inject fear into the defense. Right now, I see LJ as a good No. 3 RB or Flex option with the potential to become a No. 2 option. I think LJ has a bit of an edge this year, especially if you can get him in the 5-6 rounds, which is where he’s mostly gone in the mock drafts I’ve been involved with. Johnson and I are looking for him to come back a little bit. Some people compare him to LT, but there is no comparison because LT had a longer career than Johnson and therefore may be closer to the end. Just be safe with LJ. Don’t touch him too much, and if you do get him, make sure to handcuff him to Charles with a late round pick for insurance. Smith did not have a project value at press time.

WR Bowe is poised to become a star in his 3rd year and could benefit greatly from Cassel’s presence at QB. Bowe caught 86 passes for 1,022 yards and 7 TDs, marking a slight improvement over his rookie campaign. There are some receivers that seem like that, and Bowe is one of those receivers. The 3rd year LSU prof is a good route runner, has great hands and seems to be a good character guy and a very good coach. Also, he is big at 6’2″ 221. Gives him the ability to catch jump balls with defenders. I expect Bowe to have another solid season, as most NFL receivers in their 3rd year seem to be. He’s being drafted as a No. 2 option, but don’t be surprised if he goes higher than that with Cassel and Haley now in Kansas City. There’s nothing else in the way of KC receivers in terms of fantasy potential. As mentioned, Chiefs fantasy Gonzalez is now an Atlanta Falcon leaving KC. nobody at the TE position and Mark Bradley and Bobby Engram show nothing but emergency options for your fantasy team.. Bottom line, look for Bowe to be statistically break under Haley, but avoid the other receivers.

The Chiefs have been terrible on defense the last few years, but I think that should change this year, especially if Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson play the way they are capable of. Picking Jackson over Aaron Curry is a tough one if you ask me, and the Chiefs made that pick based solely on the defensive scheme they play. Look for the Chiefs to improve defensively this year, but there are better options in terms of DST’s consistent production. Rookie Ryan Succop and Connor Barth battle for the hitting job during practice. This concludes my examination of the 2009 Chiefs fantasy prospects. Next: San Diego Chargers.
