Five Ways to Expand Your Comfort Zone

Expanding your comfort zone isn’t entirely about building self-confidence. However, the two fit together very well. One begets the other. So many people feel stuck…bored from a safe and comfortable but not-so-exciting routine. The fear of falling flat on your face or looking foolish stops you from stepping outside of the comfortable life you’ve created for yourself. If your goal is to expand your comfort zone, then you need to think positively while doing these things. Remember that nothing bad can happen to you if you are smart about trying new things. It’s all just new adventures. Be like a curious child and have some fun.

1) Join Toastmasters or take a theater class. The idea here is that you force yourself to speak publicly. By learning how to project your voice and how to think clearly on stage, you will be able to conduct yourself better in business and when getting your point across to others. This will give you a lot of confidence that will help you push your comfort zone when it comes to speaking in front of others. Everyone is always scared at first. Public speaking is America’s number one phobia. You’ll be surprised how much fun it can be. Before you know it, you’ll be running into a few practice mistakes or public speaking mistakes. It will probably become a new hobby that you really like.

2) Take a different route home every day for a week and shop at a brand new store. By getting out of your normal daily routine, you realize how much time you can safely stay in your comfort zone. Breaking out of a rut can be as simple as trying a new restaurant or rearranging the furniture in the house. You can switch bedrooms with one of your roommates or move to a new apartment. Go on vacation to a completely unfamiliar place. The idea here is to change your physical environment and mix up your sensory experiences. By forcing yourself to go to new places, you not only realize how attached you are to your old favorite places, but you also force yourself to see the world from a new angle.

3) Learn the type of sport. This should be done taking into account your age and physical health. For some it might be an extreme sport like sky diving. For others it might be playing tennis or golf. The idea is that you once again force yourself to meet other people and push yourself physically into unknown territories. You should definitely choose something that you enjoy and that won’t hurt. Avoid jogging or high-impact aerobics if you have bad knees. If you’re bored out of your mind while watching baseball, then you probably won’t enjoy the game. You should also carefully consider whether or not you are a team player. Maybe you’d rather learn to rock climb than play flag football. Whatever you choose, keep yourself fully equipped and safe to explore.

4) Compliment three strangers every day for a week. This is not the same as public speaking. This is private talk. To do this properly, you need to be fully aware of the people around you. You’d be surprised how many strangers you pass every day. You also need to think of really nice things to say. It’s not enough to just talk to three strangers, complimenting them forces you to think about that person before you talk to them. We can casually say “we have good weather”. It’s not really connecting and focusing on another human being. Push yourself outside of your comfort zone to tell strangers you see something good in them. You will make their day and yours. At the end of the week you can even make new friends.

5) Volunteer at a nursing home, children’s cancer clinic, or AIDS hospice center. They will love you just for showing up and in talking to them you will learn all about the real regrets of people in life. People never say, “I’ve really had a lot of adventures.” Instead, they almost always comment on all the adventures they denied themselves. They talk about how if they could do it all over again…how they would be more spontaneous and kind. There’s nothing like seeing people at the end of their lives make you truly appreciate them. Spend your time on those who don’t have much time and you will soon realize how much the world has to offer. Maybe you want to get some larger-than-life teeth before it’s too late?

All of these ideas are variations on the same theme. You should practice being spontaneous. The whole point of a comfort zone is that you don’t give yourself room to be free, playful, and spontaneous. You are too self-censored and too normal for your own happiness. After you’ve tried a few things on this list, then make a list of 100 things you want to do before you die and start doing them. Have a great time with this concept. There is no reason to expand your comfort zone to take on more work commitments or responsibilities. You will have enough of this support in life. You do this for your own happiness and no one else’s. Allow yourself to spread your wings so you can fly a little higher and a little farther to see what else is out there.
