2010 FIFA World Cup – South Africa Calling!

South Africa is ready to welcome the country with open arms, modern infrastructure, interesting places and good security. More than 630,000 tickets have already been taken by fans from 188 countries and they can’t wait to wear the football jerseys and cheer on their favorite teams!

With around 430,000 fans arriving in South Africa next June, the country is full of action. Ten international stadiums are being planned for the tournament, five of which are new. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth, located in an area with beautiful beaches, has been declared open. The impressive Moses Mabhida in Durban with its tall arch shaped like Wembley Stadium even has a cable car that takes you to the beach front!

Polkwane, the land of the upside down baobab tree and the origin of ancient civilizations, should be ready with its stadium in October. Like Nelspruit, South Africa’s very own Garden of Eden. The fifth airport, Green Point, in Cape Town’s most populous city is preparing to open in February. Green Point is the only stadium in the world with a roof made of glass!

Soccer City Stadium, located on the outskirts of Soweto in Johannesburg, has been developed with a design that takes inspiration from African architecture. With so many modifications that have gone into it, it can be called a new all-purpose stadium! The opening match of the 2010 FIFA World Cup is scheduled to be played in this 94,000 capacity stadium. Four other venues – Ellis Park, Free State, Loftus Versfeld and Royal Bafokeng – have been promoted to host Confederations Cup matches this month.

Jozi, as the residents of Johannesburg call it, is the financial center of the African continent. It has energy, culture, fun, and also, peace and tranquility with 2328 parks creating a large and valued greenbelt. Joberg is the birthplace of South Africa’s football heritage. Professional football started here in the offices of the old Rand Daily Mail newspaper back in 1958!

There are the champions Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates and Jomo Cosmos. When Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates play each other, it is one of the most competitive sports in the world! Johannesburg also produced famous players such as Jomo Sono and Kaizer Motaung, who founded the top teams. Sono has even had the honor of playing with legends like Pele and Franz Beckenbauer! Ace or Patrick Ntsoelengoe has pride of place as one of South Africa’s greatest footballers.

Apart from setting the stage for a good 2010 World Cup, high hopes rise for the tournament. With a lot of investment in infrastructure, roads, airports, security, hotels and football merchandise, South Africans want the World Cup to showcase the best their country has to offer in an effort to rebuild, increase its popularity, benefit its people and act as a catalyst for the country’s economy. Until then, let the vuvuzelas fly as the soccer stars arrive proudly wearing their Confederations Cup World Cup soccer jerseys, a replica of the world’s biggest soccer tournament!
